2009 Toyota Yaris Overview

When it was new, reviewers said the 2009 Toyota Yaris hatchback and sedan were perfect matches for the city. All models have a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that isn’t very powerful, but test drivers thought it could handle commuter duty. The Yaris also has good fuel economy ratings of 29/36 mpg city/highway, making it an even more practical daily driver.

If you have a family or frequently transport passengers, the Yaris may not be large enough for you. Reviewers panned its second row for being cramped. While the Yaris sedan has good cargo space, the hatchback has less room than competitors. The base Yaris sedan has standard features that are typical for the class. It comes with air conditioning and anti-lock brakes, but not a stereo. Upper trim levels and option packages add things like a stereo with MP3 capability, iPod interface, auxiliary jack, power windows and door locks and cruise control. Electronic stability control isn’t available on any Yaris model.

While the Yaris doesn’t have the most interior space or the longest list of standard features, it’s a worthy choice for a reliable city car with good fuel economy.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Hyundai Elantra sedan, which was the 2009 U.S. News Best Compact Car for the Money, has a lot more passenger and cargo space than the Yaris. According to reviewers, it can seat rear passengers comfortably, which most reviewers said the Yaris can’t do. The Elantra doesn’t have many standard features, but models can be well-equipped with electronic stability control, Bluetooth and a USB port.

Check out the 2009 Scion xD if you don’t need lots of interior space but want a model with more standard features than the Yaris. The xD, which is only available in one trim, comes with air conditioning and a Pioneer stereo that has a USB port. You’ll also get a higher safety score with the xD.
