Reviewers agree that the highlight of the 2009 Toyota Tundra's performance is its powerful 5.7 liter V8 engine. But the Tundra still provides a truckier ride than some expected.

Acceleration and Power

The Tundra offers a 4.0-liter V6 or a 4.7-liter V8, as well as a new 5.7-liter V8. Reviewers find the base engines adequate, but most are overwhelmed with how fast and powerful 5.7-liter V8-equipped Tundras feel. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the two-wheel drive Tundra with the V6 at 15/19 mpg city/highway, while the 4.7-liter model scores 14/17 mpg city/highway. The 5.7-liter V8 is rated at 14/18 mpg city/highway. Some reviewers aren't thrilled with the gas mileage.

Handling and Braking

Most reviewers say the ride isn't as refined when compared to the more solid rides offered by the new Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram. Several find the Tundra's power rack-and-pinion steering is numb as well.
