2009 Toyota Tundra Review

High safety scores, as well as powerful available engines, make the 2009 Toyota Tundra a good choice among 2009 full-size pickups.

Pros & Cons

  • Powerful V8 engines
  • Great safety scores
  • Chintzy interior materials

2009 Toyota Tundra Overview

While some reviewers found that the Tundra rides a bit rougher than some of its rivals, most were impressed with its solid feel and powerful engines. The 2009 Tundra was offered with a base V6 or two V8 engine options when it was new. Most reviewers tested models equipped with the biggest V8, and remarked that this engine makes the Tundra feel especially fast and powerful. Two- and four-wheel drive were offered on the 2009 Tundra. A two-wheel drive Tundra with the V6 engine averages 15/19 mpg city/highway, which is typical for the class. The Tundra can tow up to 10,800 pounds when equipped with the larger 5.7-liter V8.

While reviewers agreed that the Tundra’s cabin wasn’t as upscale or made with as many soft-touch materials as its domestic rivals, most found the controls and layout to be simple and straightforward. The regular cab Tundra has seats for three, while Double (extended) and crew cabs have seating for up to six. Reviewers found the seats in both front and back to offer plenty of space and support. The base trim has few notable standard features, though it does have a few more than some rivals. Standard features include dual-zone manual climate control and a four-speaker stereo with an auxiliary input jack. Features available as options and on upper trims included power windows, locks and mirrors, an upgraded stereo, Bluetooth, leather seats, heated front bucket seats, an upgraded stereo, a backup camera and navigation.

The 2009 Tundra earns excellent safety scores.
