2009 Toyota Tacoma Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2009 Toyota Tacoma was new.

Interior: 8.3

The 2009 Toyota Tacoma's interior leads the class with a long list of standard features and high-quality materials.  Still, the low-sitting driver's seat and the cramped rear seats in the Access cab cause the Tacoma to lose a few points with reviewers.

  • "The Tacoma interior gets a higher grade than other compact trucks, with a simple but effective layout, supportive seats and attention-to-detail build quality." -- PickupTrucks.com
  • "Tacoma's interior is well finished, with high-quality materials. The overall atmosphere on some versions, however, borders on bland or busy." -- Consumer Guide

While most reviews say that the Tacoma's seats are comfortable, a few wonder if hard-core truck buyers will appreciate it's car-like driving position.  The backseat in the Double cab earns the best reviews for comfort, while the backseats in the Access cab are almost universally disliked.

  • "The new seats are designed with pleasant bolstering and adjustability to fit most body types and sizes." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Fine headroom and legroom. All models tested had available sport seats, which are comfortable and have good support for fast cornering. Shorter drivers may wish for seat-height adjustment, which isn't offered." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Overall, the mid-size Tacoma feels very roomy. On the Double Cab, the big back doors open up to a back seat as roomy as that in many small sedans." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The seatback is angled back slightly, making it more comfortable. In a back-to-back comparison test, we found the back seats of the Tacoma more comfortable than those in the Frontier." -- New Car Test Drive

Interior Features

Most reviews note that the Tacoma's interior is welcoming and practical, with a surprisingly long list of standard features for this class.

  • "The steering wheel both tilts and telescopes, a welcome and unexpected feature in a truck like this." -- New York Times
  • "Although the Tacoma's interior isn't particularly fancy, it provides plenty of practicality and comfort." -- Edmunds
  • "Legible gauges with smooth-working switchgear. Audio and climate controls are mounted high on the central dashboard, yet are within easy reach." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The comfortable interior is functional, with easily read gauges and large controls that are within convenient reach and operate smoothly." -- MSN
  • "A recessed, three-ring instrument cluster looks handsome and is in clear view. Most, if not all of the controls are easy to reach and adjust, and steering wheel-mounted controls for the radio are available." -- Kelley Blue Book

While the Tacoma's bed is the longest in the class, providing plenty of exterior cargo room, reviews note that interior cargo room is about average for the class.  The Access and Double cab models offer more interior cargo room than regular cab models.

  • "Storage space is plentiful." -- Edmunds
  • "To fold the rear seat, you first have to flip the bottom cushion up toward the front seats, remove the headrests, and then fold down the backrest onto the floor. So it takes three steps, rather than the one-step process in the Dodge, Honda, and Nissan." -- Car and Driver
