2019 Toyota Sienna Performance Review

Performance: 8.0

The 2019 Toyota Sienna does a fine job providing a comfortable ride, and its strong engine delivers ample power for most situations. The class-exclusive all-wheel-drive option is a major plus.

  • A strong V6 makes the Sienna one of the quickest minivans on the market. The engine isn't terribly responsive in typical driving, and ample body roll reveals itself on curvy roads, but most minivan drivers should find it tolerable." -- Edmunds
  • "Why other minivans don't offer the option of all-wheel drive is a mystery, but one that works in the Sienna's favor. Although not inexpensive, for anyone living in the northern portion of the country, this option is worth its weight in gold." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Most road flaws are soaked up without fuss and the suspension provides good isolation around town and on the highway." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Acceleration and Power

Powering the 2019 Toyota Sienna is a 296-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine that’s among the most powerful in the class. The Sienna accelerates easily and has plenty of power for highway passing. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard.

The front-wheel-drive Sienna gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. That’s in line with rivals, as all minivans tend to get similar fuel economy estimates. Fuel economy dips to 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway in models with AWD.

  • "The Sienna's stout V6 gives it the power of a comparable SUV, and its eight-speed transmission helps maximize fuel economy." -- Edmunds
  • "With its powerful 296-horsepower V6 engine, the Toyota Sienna has always delivered impressive acceleration that borders on sporty, although we don't envision many Sienna drivers challenging other cars to a drag race. The Sienna's power is better used for passing and merging, and tackling steep grades with a full complement onboard. On the highway, the Sienna is a serene machine, cruising effortlessly at 75 mph with barely a hint of road or wind noise infiltrating the cabin." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The 3.5-liter V6 delivers lively performance; we averaged 20 mpg overall on regular fuel. The all-wheel drive model is a tiny bit quicker but its different gearing and higher weight chop about one mpg off the average fuel use." -- Consumer Reports (2018)

Handling and Braking

Like most minivans, the Toyota Sienna prioritizes comfort. The ride is quiet and gentle, and the soft suspension absorbs road flaws. This is a large van, however, not a car like Toyota's Camry and Yaris. It rolls quite a bit around corners. The sportier SE trim gives you better cornering ability but a slightly firmer ride. The Sienna comes standard with front-wheel drive, and it is the only vehicle in its class to offer all-wheel drive.

  • "The Sienna glides down the highway, offering a supremely comfortable ride. It can get a little unsettled if you hit a bump in the middle of a turn, but that's the only real knock against it." -- Edmunds
  • Though body lean is well suppressed, the Sienna corners like the big vehicle it is. The steering is responsive but feels numb and lacks feedback. The turning circle is small enough for easy maneuverability. In the tight turns at our track, the Sienna reached its cornering limits early on and managed only a modest speed through our avoidance maneuver but proved ultimately secure." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • Those looking for a bit more feedback from their minivan's driving experience should look to the SE trim. … The trade-off for the SE's better drivability, however, is a firmer ride and a bit more tire noise." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
