2019 Toyota Sienna Interior Review

Interior: 8.0

The 2019 Toyota Sienna has a nice interior. The materials are high-quality and durable, especially in higher trims, and there’s plenty of space for passengers and cargo. It’s not quite as upscale as some rivals, but there are lots of standard safety features and an enhanced, simple-to-use infotainment system.

  • The interior of our top-trim tester doesn't feel quite as nice as that of a comparable Chrysler Pacifica or Kia Sedona. With less than 10,000 miles on its odometer, our Sienna tester had already developed a few creaks, and the second-row sunshades vibrated when deployed." -- Edmunds
  • Most minivans have fairly utilitarian interiors, with the Sienna coming in about average, helped by the 2015 update. It's plusher than the stark Honda Odyssey, but isn't as plush as the Kia Sedona. … The dashboard and door tops are now padded to the touch and higher-trim versions are trimmed with accents of wood and chrome." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "More importantly, we think that upscale Sienna models bring a whole new level of luxury to the minivan world, with the high-end Sienna Limited starting to feel more like a Lexus than a Toyota." -- Autotrader (2015)

The base Toyota Sienna L seats seven people, as does the Limited trim and every model with all-wheel drive. Every other Sienna seats eight, thanks to a middle seat in the second row. Cloth upholstery and a Split & Stow third-row seat are standard. Power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel, second- and third-row manual sunshades, and dual power-sliding rear doors are available. Some upper trims come with second-row lounge chairs that recline and have footrests.

The Sienna is generally comfortable and spacious. The first two rows have ample space for adults, and the second-row seats can slide to allow easy access to the back row. A sloping roofline intrudes on headroom for taller people in the third row.

There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connections in the second-row seats and two more complete sets in the third row.

  • There's an ample amount of room up front, and the second-row seats slide all the way to the third row, though a sloping roofline reduces headroom the farther you go back. There's enough legroom in the third row to accommodate adults, though taller individuals might find headroom a bit limited." -- Edmunds
  • You buy a minivan for its practical interior, and the Sienna doesn't disappoint. The cabin is spacious and versatile, with available seating for eight. Fancy top-line Limited versions offer second-row lounge seating, complete with footrests. Too bad the driving position is somewhat cramped, with sparse left foot room." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • The Sienna's front seats provide satisfactory support on long trips, though they do make us miss the superior chairs in the Honda Odyssey. … The top-of-the-line recliner-style captain's chairs feature footrests that flip up, but the front occupants will have to cooperate by sliding their seats up; otherwise, the footrests won't have room to extend." -- Autotrader (2016)

Interior Features

The 2019 Sienna comes standard with remote keyless entry, tri-zone automatic climate control, and the Entune infotainment system with five USB ports, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, voice controls, a six-speaker stereo, a Wi-Fi hot spot, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and a 7-inch touch screen.

Toyota also outfits most of their vehicles, including the Sienna, Camry, Corolla (both the sedan and hatchback), and RAV4, with a suite of advanced safety features called Toyota Safety Sense P. This suite includes a rearview camera, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and a pre-collision warning and braking system with pedestrian detection.

Available features include blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, satellite radio, HD Radio, Driver Easy Speak (a public address system that allows the driver to parrot orders and grievances to rear-seat occupants through the stereo speakers), a 10-speaker JBL sound system, navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a single- or dual-pane moonroof. Neither Android Auto nor wireless device charging is offered.

The Entune infotainment system is easy to use. It responds quickly to inputs, and there are several physical controls for climate, audio, and entertainment settings.

  • The user interface is intuitive, although the touchscreen interface is unappealing. Recent upgrades such as more USB ports, standard driver safety features and Apple CarPlay are welcome additions." -- Edmunds
  • A high-mounted touch-screen audio system has simple on-screen page logic. Most fonts are big and easy to read. There are small traditional volume and tuning knobs, but we could do without the flush touch-sensitive buttons that surround the radio screen. It (sic) too easy to brush them and activate them by accident." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Dead center of the dash is Toyota's latest Entune entertainment and information system, and it's a pretty good one. All models … get a 7-inch touchscreen augmented by two knobs, one for volume and one for tuning. All of the touch-sensitive buttons respond immediately to input and the system changes between functions quickly, so you're never waiting long for the computer to think." -- Motor Trend (2015)

The Sienna has 39.1 cubic feet of space behind the third-row seats, 87.1 cubic feet behind the second row, and a maximum 150 cubic feet behind the front seats. That’s a tremendous amount of space, but you have to remove the second-row seats to use it all. The third-row seats can fold into the floor, and a power liftgate is available.

  • "The load floor is fairly flat with the third row folded, and loading or unloading items is a cinch thanks to a low cargo liftover height in the back. The Sienna offers excellent cargo volume behind the third row and front row with the second row removed." -- Edmunds
  • Folding away the split third-row bench opens up a cavernous cargo bay. Mastering the maneuver for dropping the third row into its well takes practice. And wrestling out the second-row seats, if need be, takes considerable strength. Even with the second-row seats removed, some seat-track hardware remains, making it hard to slide in large, heavy cargo." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "Toyota's minivan features … plenty of nooks and crannies up front for electronics and bags, and ample storage in back behind the third row." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
