2017 Toyota Sienna Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Toyota Sienna was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.3

The 2017 Toyota Sienna has a modern and attractive interior with high-quality materials and easy-to-use infotainment features. The dashboard and touch screen have clear and simple layouts that make for no-fuss controls. Higher-end models get leather and simulated wood accents in the cabin. The Sienna’s interior has a high-quality look and feel for its price.

Cargo room is excellent for the class, and seating is spacious, even in the second and third rows.

Besides family conversations, the only noise you’ll hear in the cabin is your radio and Blu-ray movies. The Sienna has a quiet highway ride, making for a peaceful cabin. However, if you upgrade to the Sienna SE, which comes with sport-tuned suspension, road noise may make it into the cabin.

  • "Lower trim levels of the Sienna are attractively decked out with high-quality fabric upholstery, while higher-end models get leather along with simulated wood cabin accents. Materials quality is very good, and the dash design is modern and attractive." -- Edmunds
  • "The upgraded cabin materials make the Sienna's interior a much nicer place to be." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
  • "More importantly, we think that upscale Sienna models bring a whole new level of luxury to the minivan world, with the high-end Sienna Limited starting to feel more like a Lexus than a Toyota. That's good news for van drivers who spend big money to get a Sienna Limited (which starts around $41,000 with shipping). We think the previous Sienna's cheaper look really hurt the minivan's interior appearance. That's no longer true for 2015 -- and that means the Sienna no longer must play second fiddle to the traditionally nicer Honda Odyssey." -- Autotrader (2015)

Seating

The 2017 Sienna has standard seating for seven in most models and standard seating for eight in the SE and XLE trims. An optional middle seat in the second row increases capacity to eight in all other trims. The eight-passenger Sienna comes with a second-row bench with a sliding center seat that improves access for a child-safety seat. It can also be removed and stored in the van when not in use.

The Sienna comes standard with fabric upholstery and a Split & Stow third-row seat.It also includes four LATCH locations, including lower anchors on outboard second-row seats and passenger-side and center third-row seats.

Optional features include leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, sliding second-row seats, and a power-folding third row. Extendable footrests on the second row captain’s chairs allow passengers to sit back and put their feet up, making for a more comfortable ride. However, front occupants may need to slide their seats forward so the footrests can fully extend.

The Sienna has plenty of space for passengers, with good head- and legroom even in the second and third rows.

  • "The eight-passenger Sienna comes with a [split-folding] second-row bench with a sliding center section that slides forward to improve access for a child safety seat. It can also be removed and stowed within the van itself (unlike the Odyssey's, where you must find a place for it elsewhere)." -- Edmunds
  • The Sienna's front seats provide satisfactory support on long trips, though they do make us miss the superior chairs in the Honda Odyssey. In the base 7-passenger version, the second row consists of standard captain's chairs that slide fore and aft. Opt for an 8-passenger Sienna, and you get a special center seat in the second row that slides forward independently in case you want to keep an extra-close eye on a child sitting there. The top-of-the-line recliner-style captain's chairs feature footrests that flip up, but the front occupants will have to cooperate by sliding their seats up; otherwise, the footrests won't have room to extend." -- Autotrader (2016)
  • “Second-row outboard seats are comfortable, center position in eight-passenger configuration is tight." -- Autoblog (2015)

Interior Features

The 2017 Sienna is chock-full of technology. It comes standard with Bluetooth, a rearview camera, and the Entune infotainment system featuring a 6.1-inch touch screen, Siri Eyes Free, and a USB port.

There is a long list of optional features including, a 7-inch touch screen, a moonroof, front and rear parking assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic pre-collision braking, rear cross traffic alert, a six-speaker sound system, HD Radio, adaptive cruise control, a 10-speaker sound system including a subwoofer, smartphone app integration, the Entune App Suite, and Driver Easy Speak – an intercom system that projects your voice through the speakers from the front seats to the rear seats.

The Entune App Suite features include Destination Search, Facebook Places, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable, Pandora, Yelp, and real-time traffic, weather, sports, stocks, and fuel prices.

Something kids will love (and parents will appreciate) is the optional dual-view Blu-ray disc entertainment system. This allows for two separate video sources to play at the same time. So, when one wants child wants to watch the latest movie and another wants to play the newest game, the dual-view system will keep them both happy – and save parents a headache.

The Sienna's touch-screen infotainment system is user-friendly and responsive, with easy-to-navigate menus. The surrounding physical buttons make for easier volume and tuning control if you don't like touch screens. Commonly used controls are situated close to the driver, making them easy to reach from the driver’s seat.

  • "On the electronics front, every Sienna comes with a touchscreen interface. Both available screens feature a similar easy-to-decipher menu structure with surrounding buttons that require little effort to jump from one main function to another, including the built-in navigation system or a suite of smartphone-connected services. There's also an available rear-seat entertainment system, which features a split-screen monitor that allows two different media (a movie on one side and a video game on the other, for example) to play simultaneously, thereby making it easier to quash at least one potential sibling argument." -- Edmunds
  • "We also think that the van's controls are arranged in a much more logical fashion, which makes it easier to perform simple tasks, such as changing the climate control settings." -- Autotrader (2015)
  • "Dead center of the dash is Toyota's latest Entune entertainment and information system, and it's a pretty good one. All models except the base get a 7-inch touchscreen augmented by two knobs, one for volume and one for tuning. All of the touch-sensitive buttons respond immediately to input and the system changes between functions quickly, so you're never waiting long for the computer to think. Base models get a smaller screen with hard buttons and a slightly less intuitive user interface." -- Motor Trend (2015)

Cargo

The 2017 Sienna has excellent cargo space compared to other minivans, with 39.1 cubic feet behind the third row, 87.1 behind the second row, and 150 behind the first row. There is also plenty of storage within the cabin, with multiple nooks and crannies for anything kids might want and everything parents might need. A power liftgate is available.

  • Maximum cargo space is 150 cubic feet, though to achieve this you have to take out the second-row seats, which are quite heavy and awkward to remove." -- Edmunds
  • "Toyota's minivan features … plenty of nooks and crannies up front for electronics and bags, and ample storage in back behind the third row." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Small-items storage is ample, highlighted by two large glove boxes and, on most models, a generously sized center console." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
