2009 Toyota Sienna Review

The 2009 Toyota Sienna packs a high-quality interior, which makes it one of the top minivans in the class.

Pros & Cons

  • Only minivan available with all-wheel drive
  • Powerful and well-liked engine
  • Heavy handling
  • Lowest safety score in the class

2009 Toyota Sienna Overview

The 2009 Toyota Sienna won our Best Minivan for the Money award in 2009 and is one of the top-rated vehicles in its class. When it was new, reviewers liked the combination of comfort and power in the 2009 Sienna. Not much changed on the Sienna since its redesign in 2004, so you may want to consider older models to save money.

All 2009 Sienna models come standard with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces a class-leading 266 horsepower. Test drivers praised the Sienna’s engine power when it was new, but disliked the Sienna’s handling, which they described as heavy. On the plus side, the Sienna is the only minivan to offer available all-wheel drive. On the down side, the Sienna has the worst safety score in the class.

Strong build quality and a decent list of standard features earned reviewer praise when the Sienna was new. Notable standard features include dual sliding rear doors with power-down windows, a six-speaker stereo system with an auxiliary audio input and a telescoping steering wheel. Optional features when it was new include navigation, a back-up camera, power-sliding rear doors and a DVD entertainment system.

Other Cars to Consider

If you want a more agile minivan, consider the 2009 Honda Odyssey, which reviewers liked for its car-like handling when it was new. The Odyssey also has great safety scores and slightly better interior and performance ratings than the Sienna.

The 2009 Kia Sedona offers good fuel economy while scoring higher safety ratings than the Sienna. While reviewers agreed that the Sedona’s interior wasn’t quite as nice as the Sienna’s, the base Sedona does come with more standard features.
