Buying Advice

Last Updated: February 6, 2020

Class-Leading Sales: The RAV4 finished 2019 as the top-selling compact SUV, just ahead of both the Nissan Rogue and Honda CR-V for the top spot. The RAV4 outsold the CR-V by 17 percent. Dealerships sold a similar number of RAV4 models last year relative to 2018.

Competitive Base Prices: A base RAV4 starts at $25,950, which is around $1,100 above the segment average for base prices in this highly-competitive class. However, a base RAV4 comes standard with a full suite of advanced safety features – like pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control – making it an excellent value. When comparably equipped, options like the Honda CR-V will cost you just a bit less.

Time to Buy: The RAV4 continues to be a top seller because it offers everything most crossover shoppers are looking for, while also being one of the more reliable vehicles on the market. That means negotiating a low price at the dealership will be a challenge. However, since the 2019 model was redesigned, dealerships may be willing to sell outgoing models at a lower price with few changes to the current model year. Our Toyota deals page has information on financing, cash back, and leasing deals this month. Buyers on a tighter budget should also take a look a new Kia Sportage ($23,990). The Sportage was a finalist for our 2020 Best Compact SUV for the Money award.
