Buying Advice

Last Updated: January 24, 2019

Dominant Sales: The RAV4 was not only the top-selling compact SUV, but was also the best-selling vehicle across all crossover and SUV segments in 2018. Dealerships sold 4.8 percent more RAV4 models in 2018 than they did the year before.

Above-Average Prices: A base RAV4 starts at $25,500, which is about $1,000 above average for base prices in this highly-competitive class. However, a base RAV4 comes standard with a full suite of advanced safety features – like pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control – making it an excellent value. When comparably equipped, options like the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue will cost you a bit more.

Time to Buy: The RAV4 continues to be a top seller because it offers everything most crossover shoppers are looking for, while also being one of the more reliable vehicles on the market. That means negotiating a low price at the dealership will be a challenge. However, since the redesigned 2019 model is now on sale, dealerships may be willing to sell the outgoing 2018 models at a lower price. Our Toyota deals page has information on financing, cash back, and leasing deals this month. Buyers on a tighter budget should take a look at the Kia Sportage. The Sportage starts about $2,000 below the RAV4 and ranks higher on our compact SUV rankings.
