2020 Toyota RAV4 Performance

U.S. News Best Price Program

2020 Toyota RAV4 Performance Review

Performance: 7.9

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 has well-balanced handling, a comfortable ride, and great fuel economy. Its engine is sufficiently powerful, and the transmission is refined.

  • "The new RAV4's stiffer body structure, redone suspension and improved steering result in a compact SUV that's more involving and responsive to drive." -- Autotrader
  • "The RAV4's acceleration feels natural and linear, though deeper prods of the accelerator pedal don't result in much more additional thrust. The transmission is more convincingly well-rounded, shifting smoothly and downshifting promptly to help mask the engine's meager torque at low revs." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "The engine is still somewhat buzzy, with plenty of noise under wide-open throttle, which hurts the RAV4's refinement quotient despite the more polished chassis. An eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly and helps improve fuel economy." -- Car and Driver (2019)

Acceleration and Power

The Toyota RAV4 comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. The RAV4 has decent acceleration but lacks enough torque to get you going quickly from a stop. Under heavy throttle, the engine can be loud. The transmission delivers smooth, timely shifts that help maximize the engine's power.

The 2020 RAV4 gets an EPA-estimated fuel economy of up to 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, which is excellent for the compact SUV class.

  • "The RAV4 offers good power and fuel economy. ... Most compact SUV buyers will be happy with the engine’s power, and the transmission does a fine job. The 8-speed is eager to upshift, optimizing fuel economy." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The 4-cylinder engine offers the most standard horsepower in the segment, but it doesn't feel overtly quick as a result. 'Sufficient' sums it up best." -- Autotrader
  • "It definitely doesn't have the low-end response of its turbocharged competitors, and the engine itself was surprisingly shrill when driven with authority up the various hills. … Yet, for this segment, the RAV4's acceleration is more than sufficient, while the also-new eight-speed automatic functions in a more traditional manner than Honda and Subaru's CVTs." -- Autoblog (2019)

Handling and Braking

The RAV4 has well-weighted steering and a good amount of feedback from the road. The ride quality is comfortable over most surfaces. Front-wheel drive is standard, and there are two optional all-wheel-drive systems. The upgraded version of AWD in the Adventure and TRD Off-Road models has torque-vectoring steering and hill descent control.

  • "Most drivers should appreciate the new RAV4's poise around corners and improved steering feedback compared to past generations. The torque-vectoring AWD system offered on the Adventure, Limited, and TRD Off-Road trims further enhances on-road handling and also benefits off-road and poor-weather traction." -- Autotrader
  • "This base gives the RAV4 its solid feel … and car-like ride and handling. … The suspension offered a pleasant balance of comfort and handling ability." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We found the … RAV4 to be a comfortable ride with secure handling. Steering is actually better than we were expecting, with good weight and quick response. Body roll is well managed." -- Left Lane News (2019)
