2014 Toyota RAV4 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Toyota RAV4 was new.

Interior: 5.6

Most test drivers say that quality materials and a functional, modern design make the RAV4’s interior look and feel pleasant. Still, a few critics are put off by the use of hard plastics in some areas. Some reviewers write that the RAV4’s cabin is quiet thanks to a reinforced windshield that keeps engine noise at bay. The driver’s seat is comfortable and easily adjusted, they say, adding that there’s enough room in the back seat to easily accommodate tall adults. The RAV4 is equipped with a good amount of standard features that are easy to use, including Bluetooth audio streaming, auto writers note. They also praise the optional audio system for its terrific sound.

  • "To keep up with increasingly stiff competition in the crowded compact crossover segment, the RAV4 offers an attractive interior that combines modern style with sound ergonomics." -- Left Lane News
  • "We also don't like the criss-cross plastic pattern used around the shifter and on the door panels front and rear. It's so hard we could file our fingernails on it." -- Autoblog (2013)
  • "We drove around Scottsdale all day, and we grew impressed by the 2013 RAV4's improved refinement, especially the way the double-layer windshield muffled engine noise." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "The RAV4 for 2014 uses high-quality plastics and soft-touch surfaces to create a comfortable and inviting interior. Even base LE trims have contrasting colors, always a good antidote for blandness. The only piece out of step is faux carbon-fiber cladding around the doorsills and gearshift lever." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • “The faux-metallic accent pieces and chrome-trimmed switchgear add to the premium feel, and the ergonomics have improved slightly." -- Truck Trend (2013)

The 2014 RAV4 seats five and comes standard with a steering wheel that tilts and telescopes. Options include a power-adjustable driver seat with lumbar support and memory settings, heated front seats with faux-leather trim and a leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob. The driver’s seat is supportive and long-haul comfy, reviewers say. There’s plenty of legroom in the rear, even for tall adults, they say, though one reviewer notes that three adults in the back seat is a stretch.

  • "We found the driver's seat comfortable even in base models with cloth, and especially so in the Limited trim with Softex and added lumbar support. Rear legroom is good and the one-pull folding rear seats are easy to operate." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "In any case, we were still able to fit two occupants comfortably in the back seat even with the front chairs in adult-size positions, but not a third." -- Autoblog (2013)
  • "All this sounds like a fairly large sacrifice, but we had little trouble finding comfort in the back seat (even with a nearly 6-foot frame)." -- Popular Mechanics (2013)
  • "The driver seat is comfortably firm and has road trip potential." -- Edmunds (2013)

Interior Features

The 2014 Toyota RAV4 comes standard with a six-speaker audio system that includes a 6.1-inch touch-screen display, a backup camera, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, an auxiliary input and a USB port. Options available on higher trims include dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, a choice of two upgraded sound systems, navigation, a power liftgate, a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane departure alert.

Reviewers like that the RAV4 has plenty of available features, including Bluetooth audio streaming and an infotainment system that provides integration with smartphone apps. They also praise the premium audio system for its excellent sound quality.

  • “Audio buffs will love the straightforward Entune audio system that includes Apps and Bluetooth audio streaming." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "As expected, LE models … have everything you need, including a standard back-up camera, Bluetooth and a USB input." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "Just like a full-size luxury crossover, the 2013 RAV4 has an impressive suite of consumer-friendly standard features that include active and passive safety, comfort and convenience, and electronic connectivity." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "It's a fine audio system that offers plenty of volume, which is good, since there isn't going to be a beautiful soundtrack from the engine." -- Autoblog (2013)

The 2014 Toyota RAV4 has 38.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 73.4 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded. That’s more space than what most other affordable compact SUVs have, including one of the RAV4’s main rivals, the Honda CR-V. Test drivers are impressed with the amount of cargo space available. Last year, Toyota replaced the side-hinged cargo door of previous generations with a liftgate, and reviewers say it’s a lot more convenient for loading cargo. They like the available power liftgate, which can be programmed to open to a specific height. A few reviewers say the RAV4 doesn’t have as many interior storage compartments as its rivals.

  • "Due to clever packaging, the RAV4 can lay claim to class-leading cargo room. …" -- Left Lane News
  • "What we notice first is the power-operated cargo hatch, which can be programmed to open to the height you prefer, whether this is to accommodate a shorter driver or avoid banging the low ceiling in an apartment garage." -- Automobile Magazine (2013)
  • "If there's anything to complain about, it's storage: The RAV4 has fewer cubbies and slots than the CR-V." -- Edmunds (2013)
  • "The cumbersome swing-out rear door now opens upward and is far easier to use." -- Kelley Blue Book (2013)
