2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 6.9

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime has a generally upscale interior with a pleasing design, roomy seats, and a long list of features. There are a few minor gripes with the infotainment system, and cargo space is about average.

  • "Like with the RAV4 Hybrid, soft-touch materials everywhere make the cabin feel more comfortable." -- Motor Trend
  • "The top XSE model we drove seemed more Lexus-like than Toyota in some ways. It has plenty of soft-touch areas, such as the upper and middle sections of the dashboard, and the window sills. Red stitching on the door panels, dashboard, center armrest, and leather steering wheel spruce up the cabin, too." -- Consumer Reports
  • "While there's plenty to like about the Prime's interior, a few things could be improved. The chicklet-like climate control buttons are simply too small to easily manipulate while driving, and some of the switches on the steering wheel feel incredibly cheap." -- CNET

Cargo

The Toyota RAV4 Prime has 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 63.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Those figures are about average for the hybrid and electric SUV class. A power liftgate is standard, and a hands-free liftgate is optional.

  • "Apart from being sporty and comfortable, the RAV4 Prime also offers all the CUV-style practicality you could ask for." -- Autoblog
  • "The rear seats fold down nearly flat when you need maximum space." -- Consumer Reports
  • "When it's time to make an Ikea run for a load of marginal quality, affordably priced, flat-packed furniture, the RAV4 Prime makes an excellent schlepper. It offers 33.5 cubic feet of hauling space behind the second-row seat, a figure that grows to a claimed 63.2 when the backrests are dropped." -- CNET

Seating

The five-seat Toyota RAV4 Prime has comfortable front seats that offer ample support. The rear seats have plenty of head- and legroom, and it's easy to get into and out of both rows.

Standard features include cloth upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Optional features include synthetic leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat, driver's seat memory settings, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the middle seat.

  • "Entry and exit are helped by an ideal ride height and big door openings; shorter passengers can get in easily and taller people won't have to stoop to get in." -- Edmunds
  • "As in more run-of-the-mill RAV4s, the Prime's rear seat is generously portioned and quite comfortable, with good support, plus plenty of space for knees and noggins." -- CNET
  • "The faux leather seats in the XSE we rented proved comfortable and supportive, with ample side bolsters to hold you in place through corners. The driver’s seat has two-way power lumbar adjustment, and we appreciate that the front of the bottom cushion can be tilted up and down to adjust leg support." -- Consumer Reports

Interior Features

The 2021 RAV4 Prime comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch digital multi-information display, proximity keyless entry, and an infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, five USB ports, and a six-speaker stereo.

The RAV4's infotainment system is easy to use and functions smoothly. However, the graphics look a little outdated. Critics are split on the effectiveness of the physical buttons and knobs, with some saying that the controls are easy to reach and others noting that their location and size are a downside.

Optional features include a 9-inch touch screen, an 11-speaker JBL premium stereo, wireless device charging, navigation, a moonroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, ambient interior lighting, a panoramic roof, and a household-style power outlet.

Standard driver assistance features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane tracing assist, full-speed adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Optional active safety technology includes rain-sensing windshield wipers, a head-up display, a surround-view parking camera system, a rearview mirror camera, adaptive headlights, and front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.

  • "The interior is ergonomically friendly with intuitive ergonomics and nifty rubber-trimmed knobs to control the audio volume and HVAC functions. … The touchscreens stand proud on the dash, but their resolution looks more 2015 than the otherwise tastefully modern cabin." -- Car and Driver
  • "The available 9-inch screen makes most infotainment interactions quick, easy and distraction-free. It's quick to react, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard. The size and placement of physical shortcut buttons could be improved for less distraction." -- Edmunds
  • "This infotainment system is at least speedy, and the tablet-style 9-inch screen it's splashed across is huge and easy to reach, as it's mounted high on the dashboard. … With all that display real estate, Apple CarPlay (which, along with Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility comes standard) is super easy to use, showing up nice and big." -- CNET
