2011 Toyota Prius Overview

The 2011 Toyota Prius is one of the top-ranked 2011 midsize cars for many reasons. Its fuel economy ratings of 51/48 mpg city/highway are among the best available from a used midsize car, and the Prius’ interior was liked by reviewers for its hatchback versatility and large cargo hold. The Prius also ranks high because of its good safety scores. Test drivers appreciated that you can select one of three driving modes depending on how you want the Prius to perform and how much fuel you want to save.

Auto critics agreed that the 2011 Prius has an iconic, unique look, though they were divided on whether they liked it or not. A few reviewers disliked the Prius’ small wheels, which they said made the car feel unstable and added unwanted road noise. Some also said that the Prius’ steering felt artificial and that it drove like an appliance.

The 2011 Toyota Prius has a four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) sends power to the front wheels. Seven airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and traction control are standard on the 2011 Prius. The base Prius I comes with power windows and door locks, while the Prius II adds automatic headlights, push-button start, cruise control and a six-speaker stereo to the list of standard features. Niceties like Bluetooth, an upgraded stereo, heated front seats and leather upholstery are available on higher trim levels. Options like navigation, a backup camera and a USB port were bundled in packages when the Prius was new.

Other Cars to Consider

If you want a car with more convention styling, another high-ranking hybrid to consider is the 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid. The Fusion Hybrid’s fuel economy can’t top the Prius’, but its estimates are still very good. Test drivers liked the Fusion Hybrid’s nimble handling and high-quality, specious interior when it was new. However, the Prius beats the Fusion Hybrid with better safety ratings.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was a new model for 2011, and auto critics were impressed with its performance and versatility. They liked that the Sonata Hybrid is fun to drive and that it delivers good fuel economy, though it’s not as good as the Prius’ fuel economy. They also appreciated the Sonata Hybrid’s spacious interior, numerous tech features and upscale materials.
