2016 Toyota Prius V Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Toyota Prius V was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.2

Some test drivers say the 2016 Toyota Prius v's cabin has a contemporary, high-end design. A few, however, say the interior is drab and the materials quality is subpar, with lots of hard plastics. The Prius v has roomy, comfortable seats in both rows, according to auto journalists. Reviewers appreciate the many tech features in the Prius v, but they note the infotainment system can be difficult to set up. The Prius v has more cargo space than nearly every other wagon and even offers more room than many crossover SUVs.

  • "While the cabin may excel in functionality, it's not especially attractive. The gauges are nestled in a recessed area in the middle of the dashboard, leaving the area in front of the steering wheel open and unfinished-looking. Furthermore, the quality of the materials is inconsistent; some plastics are nicely grained, while others look flimsy and low-budget." -- Edmunds
  • "The Prius v's dashboard is more conventional than the spaceship-like dash in the regular Prius, but it's more upscale, too, in both appearance and construction." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "The interior design is futuristically modern, with all the controls and instruments isolated in an ‘island’ in the middle of the dash." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • Interior trim is tasteful and well assembled, but not lavish. Some unexpected surfaces are padded which help keep the interior's hard plastics from becoming overwhelming." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Seating

The 2016 Prius v has seats for five. Cloth upholstery is standard, while leatherette upholstery, heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver's seat are available. Reviewers say the front seats are comfortable and provide ample head- and legroom. A few critics say tall drivers may have difficulty finding an optimal driving position because the steering wheel doesn't telescope very far. They add the rear seats, which slide forward and backward, offer generous legroom, even for tall passengers.

  • "Unfortunately, taller drivers must contend with a steering wheel that's placed too far away. The steering column telescopes, but doesn't extend nearly far enough from the dash." -- Edmunds
  • "The back seat in the regular Prius is already quite accommodating, but the Prius v does even better with sliding/reclining rear-seat functionality and a significantly higher rear cushion, allowing long-legged passengers to ride with full under-thigh support." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "Large adults will find plenty of headroom and legroom on comfortable seats." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Interior Features

The base 2016 Prius v comes standard with a proximity key, push-button start, automatic climate control, a rearview camera and Toyota's Entune Audio infotainment system with a 6.1-inch touch screen, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth and a USB port. Higher trims come with the Entune Premium Audio infotainment system, which includes navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio and the Entune App suite with apps like Pandora and Yelp. Other optional features include an eight-speaker JBL audio system, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane departure warning and a panoramic moonroof.

Critics like the numerous tech features offered in the Prius v's higher trims, though they report setting up the infotainment system and smartphone integration is cumbersome. Reviewers say the center stack controls are easy to locate and are clearly labeled.

  • There's no shortage of tech amenities, though. Toyota's smartphone app integration system … is standard on all but the base model. Getting started with the system can be a hassle, though, since you have to install an app on your phone and register for an account, plus you always need an active data connection to use it." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "The digital gauges and hybrid system displays will be familiar to any Prius veteran, and none of the controls or readouts take much time to get used to." -- AutoTrader (2014)
  • Clearly marked buttons are the norm for most functions. … The navigation system uses a combination of button and touchscreen activation. Climate controls are mounted below the radio or navigation system on a surface that extends out from the center of the dashboard." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

Cargo

The 2016 Prius v has 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 67.3 with them folded, which is more cargo space than most rival wagons offer, and even more than many crossover SUVs. The front passenger seat and split rear seats fold flat, making it easy to haul long items, reviewers report. They like the numerous small-item storage compartments throughout the cabin, as well as the low load height of the cargo floor.

  • "Storage compartments abound. There are two stacked gloveboxes and a large center console bin, along with an open nook beneath the center stack." -- Edmunds
  • "The 'V' is for 'versatility,' and with tons of cargo space, a seat that folds in a 60/40 split, adjustable rear seats for creating more legroom, and even a fold-flat front passenger seat for extra-long objects, the 2015 Toyota Prius V delivers in spades." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Cargo space measures up to twice the regular Prius model's trunk size, placing the Prius v in crossover SUV territory. Toyota does a great job of integrating the Prius v's battery pack seamlessly beneath the floor." -- AutoTrader (2015)
  • "The large cargo area is easy to access with a good size rear hatch and low load floor. Large underfloor storage bins add to Prius v's practical nature. The split rear seat backs fold to create a flat floor, and the standard fold-flat front-passenger seat makes loading very long items a breeze." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
