2015 Toyota Prius Plug-In Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-In was new.

Interior: 6.8

Test drivers note that the 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in has a very futuristic interior design, though some think the materials are low-quality for the class. They note that the Prius Plug-in has plenty of space in its front and back seats, as well as a very roomy cargo area. Some write that the standard touch-screen infotainment system makes it difficult to change audio settings or access your smartphone apps.

  • "Materials quality in the Prius Plug-in is a bit disappointing, with harder and cheaper plastics than other cars in its price range." -- Edmunds
  • "If you like driving the future, you'll love the interior styling of the 2015 Toyota Prius." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The gauges also look ready for outer space, with a variety of digital readouts and diagrams describing what the hybrid powertrain is up to. Interior materials aren't luxury-grade, even in Advanced trim, but they don't seem cheap, either." -- AutoTrader
  • "Many of the interior panels give off the impression that this car was built to a price. It's pretty disappointing given the substantial price premium the Plug-in commands over the regular Prius." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

The 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in seats five and comes standard with fabric upholstery and heated front seats. The Advanced trim includes leatherette upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat. Automotive journalists agree that the Prius Plug-in’s front seats are roomy, though taller drivers may wish that they could pull the telescoping steering wheel farther back. The Prius Plug-in’s rear seats are quite spacious, according to critics.

  • "The rear quarters are a step down from what you'll find in a midsize car such as the Camry Hybrid, but there's still ample room for full-sized adults back there." -- AutoTrader
  • "… the rear seats offer plenty of space for passengers. Up front, though, taller drivers have to contend with a steering wheel that's placed too far away. Despite a telescoping column, it doesn't extend nearly far enough to enable a comfortable driving position." -- Edmunds
  • "Rear-seat room is decent, as is cargo space under the hatch." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Passengers are treated to ample room in both rows. …" -- Left Lane News

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in include push-button start, automatic climate control and Remote Climate, which turns on the air conditioner when you press a button on the key fob. The Prius Plug-in also comes standard with Toyota’s Display Audio infotainment system, which includes a 6.1-inch touch screen, navigation, a rearview camera, a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, a USB port, an auxiliary audio input, satellite radio, HD Radio and the Entune App Suite, which connects with your smartphone and allows you to control apps like Pandora Internet radio using the Prius Plug-in’s touch screen. The Advanced trim includes a head-up display and an upgraded infotainment system with a 7-inch high-resolution touch screen, an eight-speaker JBL sound system and access to Entune Plug-in Hybrid Apps, which lets you use your smartphone to monitor your car’s charging status and remotely activate some features. The Advanced trim is also available with the Technology Package, which adds adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning with automatic braking.

According to critics, the Prius Plug-in’s center-mounted gauges can be awkward to read. Some auto journalists say the Prius Plug-in’s standard touch screen is user-friendly, but others note that it makes the audio settings difficult to adjust. A few critics say the Entune App Suite can be a pain to use because you have to install an app on your smartphone, register for it and must have Internet connectivity to use it.

  • "The center-mounted gauges take a little getting used to, but they're clearly visible from the comfortable front seats." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The standard touchscreen operates many of the Prius' high-tech features and is, for the most part, smartly designed. The Entune system can be a hassle, though, since you have to install an app on your phone and register for an account; plus, you always need an active data connection to use Entune." -- Edmunds
  • "The speedometer readout is just out of the driver's line of sight, which can be good or bad depending on your taste. A redundant head-up display is standard on the Advanced; we wish Toyota offered it on the Base. The standard navigation system absorbs most audio controls, complicating some adjustments." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

The 2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in has 21.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats, which is more cargo capacity than most plug-in hybrid rivals have, and it comes standard with 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Auto writers note that the Prius Plug-in has lots of in-cabin storage, including two glove compartments and a large bin in the center console.

  • "Like the standard Toyota Prius, the plug-in is a segment leader in versatility. Thanks to the small capacity of the plug-in battery and its location under the floor, the hatchback body style provides 21.6 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats up. …" -- Edmunds
  • "Remarkably, the Prius Plug-in offers the same 21.6-cu-ft. trunk capacity as the regular Prius despite its larger battery pack." -- AutoTrader
  • "Cabin storage is plentiful, and includes a large bin under the raised center console, upper and lower gloveboxes, and a two-tiered console box." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The cargo volume is roomy enough for all the kids' gear." -- Chicago Tribune (2013)
