2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 7.9

The Land Cruiser is one of the best overall performing vehicles in its class. On the pavement, it has a comfortable and composed ride, and it feels equally at home on off-road trails. This Toyota features a powerful V8 engine, but its fuel economy estimates are poor compared to its rivals.

  • "The Land Cruiser is near the top of the class in most performance categories. Power is ample, and the brakes are excellent. This SUV is also highly capable off-road, as you'd expect. It's also surprisingly nice to drive around town." -- Edmunds
  • "If you're looking for a full-size SUV as rugged and off-road capable as it is reliable and comfortable, the … Toyota Land Cruiser hits the sweet spot." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "It's empowering to know your vehicle could handle virtually any terrain in the world, and the Land Cruiser has the added appeal of being quiet, comfortable and surprisingly swift on the pavement." -- Autotrader (2016)

Acceleration and Power

The 2019 Land Cruiser’s sole powertrain consists of a 381-horsepower V8 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Most shoppers will have no qualms with the Land Cruiser’s quick acceleration. This luxury large SUV gets 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway, which are below average estimates in the class. With a towing capacity of up to 8,100 pounds when properly equipped, the Lander Cruiser can tow slightly more than the average luxury large SUV. Four-wheel drive comes standard.

  • "The Land Cruiser is near the top of the class in most performance categories. Power is ample, and the brakes are excellent." -- Edmunds
  • "The Land Cruiser's 5.7-liter V8 is one of the most refined and respected in the industry. With 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, this Lexus-derived motor may not be the most powerful in its class, but its reputation for longevity and reliability is unimpeachable." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Despite the engine's age, it does an admirable job of the primary task at hand, which is pulling 5,815-lb worth of SUV fast enough to safely accelerate into traffic." -- Automobile Magazine (2018)

Handling and Braking

Thanks to its somewhat firm suspension system, the Land Cruiser delivers composed handling and a comfortable ride. Like most large SUVs, the Land Cruiser has some body roll around sharp turns, but this system does a good job of minimizing it. The brakes are strong and quick to bring the vehicle to a stop.

  • "Body roll is minimal even on tight mountain roads, thanks to the Land Cruiser's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). As big traditional SUVs go, this one feels surprisingly stable and agreeable on asphalt." -- Edmunds
  • "The Land Cruiser's fully independent suspension delivers impressive articulation off-road while delivering a firm but stable ride over pavement." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • The 5,700-pound Land Cruiser isn't a light or nimble SUV, but that same bulk and brawn contribute to its 8,100-pound tow rating." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Off-Roading

The Land Cruiser was designed with off-roading in mind. It has a ton of standard features to help you along the toughest trails, including a locking, limited-slip differential and low-speed crawl control with turn assist, which is essentially cruise control for off-roading. The multi-terrain select mode lets you adjust your suspension system to various terrain, including rock, mogul, and mud/sand. Another standout feature is the multi-terrain monitor, which uses the 360-degree camera to show you your surroundings as well as the angle of the vehicle when off-roading.

  • "As big SUVs go, this is one of the best off-road. It has full-time 4WD with a lockable center differential, a KDSS stabilizer-bar disconnect system for extreme articulation, hill descent control, crawl control, and active Multi-Terrain Select that finds traction even with the stock all-season tires." -- Edmunds
  • "The Land Cruiser SUV is one of the most capable vehicles on the planet." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "Off-road performance is excellent thanks to good ground clearance, low-range gearing, a locking center differential and a number of driving aids." -- Autotrader (2016)
