2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 7.3

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser has a powerful V8 engine and phenomenal off-road abilities, but it's plagued by poor fuel economy. Also, critics are divided over how composed this large Toyota SUV feels around turns.

  • "By its nature the Land Cruiser doesn’t have the comfort, efficiency or easy driving manners of a crossover SUV like the Toyota Highlander. Yes, the Land Cruiser will serve dutifully as a daily commuter, but Toyota’s flagship SUV remains its best roaming where the asphalt ends." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Despite the engine's age, it does an admirable job of the primary task at hand, which is pulling 5,815-lb worth of SUV fast enough to safely accelerate into traffic. … Boosting the vintage feel is Land Cruiser's heavy and slow steering. An asset while crawling up a mountain, it is almost laborious to work while crawling through a parking lot–and there's a slight excess of on-center play for comfort on the freeway." -- Automobile Magazine (2018)
  • " Power is ample, and braking power is excellent. This SUV is also highly capable off-road, as you'd expect. It's also surprisingly nice to drive around town." -- Edmunds (2018)

Acceleration and Power

The Toyota Land Cruiser comes equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 engine that produces 381 horsepower and 401-pound feet of torque. Given its large size, this Toyota SUV has surprisingly swift acceleration. The throttle response is also quick, and the standard eight-speed automatic transmission operates smoothly in most situations. When properly equipped, the Land Cruiser can tow up to 8,100 pounds.

The 2020 Land Cruiser gets an EPA-estimated 13 mpg city and 17 mpg highway, which is poor for the class.

  • "On the pavement, the Land Cruiser is an endearing brute. The throaty 5.7-liter V8 certainly helps, as you'll likely find yourself amazed at how quickly this hulking vehicle gets going from a dead stop." -- Autotrader
  • "The 5,815-pound Land Cruiser isn’t a light or nimble SUV, but its big V8 and smooth 8-speed automatic transmission work well to move its heft." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "There's plenty of power from the big V8. … Gas pedal inputs are easy to judge, which helps the driver maintain a smooth ride off-road. … Initial throttle response is touchy, which can make it hard to execute smooth takeoffs. The transmission also wants to upshift into top gear as soon as possible to save fuel, which can be a little annoying." -- Edmunds (2018)

Handling and Braking

The Toyota Land Cruiser has a generally comfortable ride on pavement, though critics are mixed when it comes to handling. Some think that the Land Cruiser has well-controlled body motions around turns, while others think that it handles like the large SUV that it is.

  • "The Cruiser's enormous dimensions and hefty weight are readily apparent from behind the wheel … and you'll constantly be reminded that you're driving a barge when taking a corner or trying to park." -- Autotrader
  • "A fully independent suspension permits the generous wheel articulation required for crawling over rocks and logs, yet also endows the Land Cruiser with a stable but somewhat firm on-road driving experience." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "As big traditional SUVs go, this one feels surprisingly stable and agreeable on asphalt. … The Land Cruiser rolls smoothly over most road imperfections. There is some bounce over larger dips, but nothing dramatic or more than expected. Driving over sharp-edged bumps can shake the cabin, but this is the exception, not the rule. In general, there's little to complain about." -- Edmunds (2018)

Off-Roading

The Land Cruiser has excellent off-road abilities thanks to standard four-wheel drive, multiple skid plates, crawl control, a locking center differential, and an adjustable suspension. The standard Multi-Terrain Select system allows you to choose from several off-road driving modes, and the standard Multi-Terrain Monitor is a system of underbody cameras that come in handy off the pavement.

  • "The Land Cruiser is arguably in a league of its own when it comes to capability and dependability. … On long, flat dirt roads, the vehicle eats up washboard as well as any other vehicle on the market. … There's a reason these vehicles are trusted for everything from transporting foreign diplomats through war-torn nations to traversing the remote and unforgiving Australian outback: There's really nothing else like the Land Cruiser." -- Autotrader
  • "[The] Land Cruiser remains a surprisingly capable and rugged off-road adventurer. Riding on a rigid body-on-frame chassis that has been part of its well-respected resume for more than 60 years, the Land Cruiser not only goes where most SUVs only dream, it can take a level of punishment that would leave lesser SUVs waiting for AAA to arrive." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "As big SUVs go, this is one of the best off-road. It has full-time 4WD with a lockable center differential, a KDSS stabilizer-bar disconnect system for extreme articulation, hill descent control, crawl control and active Multi-Terrain Select that finds traction even with the stock all-season tires." -- Edmunds (2018)
