2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Interior Review

Interior: 6.9

The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser has a high-end cabin design, excellent build quality, and a long list of standard features. However, seating space and cargo room are merely adequate.

  • "Dashboard materials are mostly upscale, though they're a little more utilitarian that what you'll find on the more expensive Land Rover Range Rover or the Lexus LX 570." -- Autotrader
  • "The rest of the Land Cruiser’s interior is a warm mix of premium materials, high-class features, and a bevy of buttons, knobs and switches for off-road use. The seats are covered in supple leather, wood accents abound, and a spiffy 9-inch touch screen sits in the center of the dash." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Interior materials consist of quality leather, soft-touch surfaces and aesthetically pleasing graining throughout. No squeaks, rattles or odd panel gaps. This is an exceedingly well-built automobile." -- Edmunds (2018)

The Toyota Land Cruiser seats eight people on three rows. The new-for-2020 Heritage Edition eliminates the third row, so it only seats five people. Leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a power tilt-and-telescoping heated steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are all standard.

The front seats are comfortable and offer excellent outward visibility in all directions. The second row is mounted low, so some passengers might complain about not having enough leg support. Otherwise, second-row passenger space is good. The third row is small, and it's not a comfortable place for adult passengers. Further, entry and exit are difficult for the last row.

There are two complete sets of second-row LATCH connectors and a tether anchor for the middle seat. The third row has no LATCH connecters. The lower anchors and outboard tether anchors are easy to access, though the middle-seat tether anchor can be hard to find.

  • "The Land Cruiser's front seats are plush and broad, and they're mounted high to give the driver a commanding view of the road. … The second row … sits rather low relative to the front seats, so back-seat passengers may find they have a less-than-ideal amount of under-leg support. The third row is also a 3-person bench, making the Land Cruiser a rare 8-passenger vehicle. None of those in the back will have much in the way of space, however, and access is awkward." -- Autotrader
  • "The … Land Cruiser has three rows and seating for eight, but the third row is tight. … From the commanding driver’s seat, you may just believe you could conquer countries in this thing." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Front seat comfort is excellent. The driver's seat is supportive and highly adjustable. The passenger seats are nearly as accommodating, though the second row is a bit low. The third row is too small for comfort." -- Edmunds (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2020 Land Cruiser include quad-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, a cooled center console, and a moonroof.

The infotainment system in the Land Cruiser features a 9-inch touch screen, a 14-speaker JBL stereo, navigation, voice recognition, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and wireless device charging. This system is generally straightforward and easy to use, though the graphics seem a little outdated. Other dashboard controls are within easy reach of the driver. A rear-seat entertainment system is one of the few options in the Land Cruiser.

Standard driver assistance features include forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a rearview camera, a surround-view parking camera system, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor, which provides a camera view from beneath the SUV.

  • "The touchscreen interface is basically the same as the upgrade unit found in other Toyotas, but with a larger display. The colors do not wash out in direct light, but the graphics are not as crisp as in newer systems." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Large gauges are clearly marked and easy to see. The turn-signal and wiper levers move with smooth precision, as do other switches. All audio, climate, and navigation controls are mounted high on the dashboard within easy reach. The navigation/touchscreen system's functions are intuitive and simple to decipher, though some testers complained that the system was occasionally slow to respond to inputs." -- Consumer Guide (2015)
  • "The Land Cruiser's updated navigation system features Entune, Toyota's new infotainment offering, and includes advanced voice recognition to create a user-friendly multimedia experience." -- Kelley Blue Book (2013)

The Land Cruiser has 16.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row seats and 41.1 cubic feet of space with these seats folded. With no third row, the Land Cruiser Heritage Edition has 53.5 cubic feet of space behind its second row. There's 82.8 cubic feet of space with all rear seats folded. A power liftgate and a roof rack are standard.

Cargo space is about average for the class, but the side-folding third-row seats take away some useful space on the sides of the cargo bay. The distinctive split-opening rear hatch is practical for loading cargo and tailgating.

  • "Around back, the Land Cruiser employs a unique split rear lift gate design. The glass is hinged at the top and lifts upwards, while the lower section folds down like a tailgate, allowing it to serve as everything from a work surface to a countertop to a bench for sitting down to change your socks after a muddy hike." -- Autotrader
  • "When not in use, the 3rd-row seats can fold, but not in the way of almost every other SUV: Instead of folding into the floor, they raise up against the side walls, eating up potential cargo space." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The nonremovable, side-folding third row is a big hindrance to capacity, but this is still a decent-size cargo area. … The split liftgate is handy for tailgating and loading, but it can make accessing deep cargo difficult. A fair trade-off." -- Edmunds (2018)
