2018 Toyota Land Cruiser Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser was new.

Performance: 8.5

The 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser delivers impressive performance. It features a powerful V8 engine and a smooth-shifting transmission. It's one of the most capable off-road vehicles on the market, complemented by refined and composed driving dynamics on the highway. Fuel economy is low, even for the class.

  • "The Land Cruiser SUV is one of the most capable vehicles on the planet." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The muscular engine also enables the Land Cruiser to tow a substantial 8,500 pounds. A six-speed automatic transmission provides silken shifts and offers a wide spread of gears to maximize efficiency, though fuel economy is about what one might expect: 13 in the city and 18 on the highway, a product of the Land Cruiser's big motor and bigger mass." -- Left Lane News (2017)
  • "When an SUV has real off-road capability, you typically expect that it comes at the expense of on-road manners. Such is not the case with the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser. On pavement, the Land Cruiser is always very civilized. The ride quality is smooth, and the cabin is quiet." -- Edmunds (2017)

Acceleration and Power

The Land Cruiser features a 5.7-liter V8 engine that puts out 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Land Cruiser's engine has ample low-end torque, which allows it to get moving quickly, and it delivers good overall power. The Land Cruiser can tow up to 8,100 pounds, which is above average for the class.

This Toyota will make you pay dearly at the pump. It earns an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. Those are some of the lowest ratings in the class.

  • "The only engine available for Toyota's 2017 Land Cruiser is a 5.7-liter V8 with 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Toyota says that 90 percent of that torque is available at just 2,200 rpm, meaning you don't have to rev this engine to get moving. It's matched to a new 8-speed automatic transmission and standard 4-wheel drive. When you put it all together, you have a drivetrain that's worthy of a luxury car...literally, as the exact same drivetrain is in the Lexus version of the Land Cruiser, the LX 570. Not only does it deal with the Land Cruiser's weight with aplomb, but it can also tow 8,500 pounds." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The 5.7-liter V8 emits a pleasing rumble when prodded, and there's plenty of power whenever you need it." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "On the pavement, the Land Cruiser is an endearing brute. The throaty V8 certainly helps; it's pretty amazing how much get-up-and-go this SUV has." -- Autotrader (2016)

Handling and Braking

There’s no getting around it: The Toyota Land Cruiser is an enormous vehicle, and you feel it when you’re driving. Despite its size, the Land Cruiser handles reasonably well, and it remains stable around turns, though there is plenty of body lean. The ride is firm, but comfortable, and four-wheel drive comes standard.

  • "Steering is precise, although effort required by the steering wheel can be somewhat heavy, as you'd expect from a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Because suspension compliance is the secret to good traction, you'll feel the body of the Land Cruiser roll noticeably in fast corners, yet this big SUV feels reassuringly planted on the pavement in nearly any situation." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Peek beneath the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser luxurious persona and you'll discover a remarkably capable SUV. … The Land Cruiser's fully independent suspension delivers impressive articulation off-road while delivering a firm but stable ride over pavement." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The Cruiser's enormous dimensions are readily apparent from behind the wheel, but you feel completely invulnerable up there, like you're on a personal suburban safari." -- Autotrader (2015)

The Land Cruiser is one of the most capable off-road vehicles you can buy. It comes equipped with standard full-time four-wheel drive, an adjustable suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, a limited-slip differential, a multi-terrain select mode that allows you to tailor the suspension to various terrain types, a multi-view camera to see surrounding obstacles, and crawl control, which automatically maintains throttle and braking at a low speed. Outside of Jeep and Land Rover, few SUVs can go where the Land Cruiser can.

  • "Unlike the Ford Expedition or Chevy Tahoe, the Land Cruiser's sophisticated Multi-Terrain 4-wheel-drive setup and low-range transfer case allow it to tackle boulder-strewn trails and steep declines." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Thanks in part to 8.9 inches of ground clearance, the Toyota Land Cruiser can ford streams as much as 27.5 inches deep. Moreover, the Land Cruiser can crawl over steep terrain where only a Jeep Wrangler or a Land Rover would dare to tread, thanks to Toyota high-tech trickery to enhance traction that includes the KDSS suspension system and the Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control. With off-road traction optimized to the rapid-fire clicks of solenoids being actuated in the brake system, the driver can concentrate on steering. And when the adventure is over, the driver can drive home again in perfect comfort." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Off-road performance is excellent thanks to good ground clearance, low-range gearing, a locking center differential and a number of driving aids." -- Autotrader (2016)
