2009 Toyota Land Cruiser Review

Few 2009 large SUVs are as capable as the highly-ranked Toyota Land Cruiser. If you’re looking for a used SUV that offers competent on- and off-road ability, as well as a luxurious and spacious interior, the Land Cruiser is a good choice.

Pros & Cons

  • Capable off-roader
  • Good towing capacity
  • Strong reliability score
  • Limited cargo space
  • Cramped third-row seat

2009 Toyota Land Cruiser Overview

When it was new, reviewers said the 2009 Land Cruiser offered a good all-around combination of luxury and utility, and that it showed a high level of craftsmanship. The Land Cruiser is also one of the few SUVs in its class with a good reliability score. The Land Cruiser is similar to the 2009 Lexus LX, and if you can do without the luxury badge, the Land Cruiser may offer a bit better value.

The Land Cruiser comes standard with a full-time four-wheel drive system that is powered by a 381-horsepower, 5.7-liter V8 engine. Reviewers said the powertrain moves the Land Cruiser with ease and pairs nicely with the standard dynamic suspension, which adapts to different types of terrain. The Land Cruiser achieves an EPA-estimated 13/18 mpg city/highway, which is about average for the class. Maximum cargo capacity with the rear rows folded is 81.7 cubic feet, which is a bit low compared with the competition. Still, the Land Cruiser can tow up to 8,500 pounds, which is fairly good.

Aside from a third row that felt cramped, reviewers thought the Land Cruiser’s standard leather seats were plenty comfortable. The Land Cruiser comes well-equipped with standard features like front and rear parking sensors, a power sunroof, a 14-speaker JBL stereo and four-zone climate control. Features like navigation, Bluetooth and a backup camera were bundled into an option package when it was new. The 2009 Land Cruiser is quite similar to the 2008 model, so you may be able to save some money by shopping for an older model.

Other Cars to Consider

If you like the Land Cruiser, you can broaden your search by including the 2009 Lexus LX as well. The two are similar, but if you want an SUV that’s loaded to the hilt with interior features and has a class-leading reliability score, you might prefer the Lexus.

Another SUV worth considering is the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL. Equipped with either a fuel-efficient diesel engine or a choice of two V8s, there’s likely a GL out there that will satisfy your needs. The GL isn’t an off-road prowler like the Land Cruiser, but unless you need that capability, the GL should be on your short list.
