2020 Toyota Corolla Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.6

The 2020 Toyota Corolla has some nice interior materials, but the overall cabin design is a little bland. Seating space can be cramped for taller occupants, and cargo space is unimpressive as well. There's a long list of user-friendly standard features.

  • "Toyota has given the interior soft-touch plastics, and this goes for the far reaches of the dash that you'd have to stretch to find. … The new Corolla serves up a sophisticated-enough interior … even if it seems a little minimalist at first glance." -- Autoweek
  • Interior materials are solidly average for the class—scratchy cheap plastic bits are kept to a minimum, and the dashboard layout is attractive enough." -- Car and Driver
  • While high-trim models, like the XSE, have neat design elements including contrast-colored seating and even some accent stitching, the Corolla's dash is overall somewhat boring to look at. At least all the materials feel nice to the touch and are less plasticky than before." -- CNET

Seating

The Toyota Corolla seats five people. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Options include premium cloth seats, front sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat. For installing child safety seats there are two complete sets of rear-seat LATCH connections.

The standard front seats are comfortable, but optional upgraded seats provide better support. Sedan models have decent space in both rows. The second row in hatchback Corollas is more cramped.

  • Rear-seat room is one of the few areas where the new car doesn't beat the old one. Rear legroom drops by more than six inches (the old Corolla had a positively palatial amount of space in back), so it's not quite as Uber- and Lyft-friendly, but the rear quarters are still more spacious than in the Corolla hatch and perfectly comfortable for two adults." -- Car and Driver
  • "The rear seat is capacious enough for a compact, with good outward visibility, although the bottom cushion is situated high to afford better legroom at the expense of headroom. … The XSE’s two-tone, faux-leather sport seats are handsome and more comfortable, with more bolstering, than those in the 'L' models." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "Passenger space seemed a little on the tight side, even for a compact sedan. Really tall front-seaters would probably find headroom and legroom lacking, and though my 5’9 frame could fit in back with the seat ahead pushed all the way rearward, headroom seemed it would be tight for anyone much taller." -- Consumer Guide

Interior Features

The 2020 Corolla comes standard with Bluetooth, a USB port, a six-speaker stereo, a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, voice recognition, and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot. Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition.

Optional features include automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, an 8-inch touch screen, an additional USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio, a moonroof, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a 7-inch digital driver information display, navigation, wireless device charging, a nine-speaker JBL premium stereo, ambient interior lighting, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive headlights.

The Corolla's infotainment system controls are straightforward and function well, though some graphics look out of date. Critics appreciate the inclusion of physical knobs for functions like audio and climate control.

  • "Audio and climate controls are very easy to use and reach, and the radio includes volume and tuning knobs along with several physical buttons. The climate system had nice rotary knobs for temperature and fan speed, a somewhat less-convenient repetitive-step pushbutton for mode." -- Consumer Guide
  • Infotainment is taken care of by touchscreens that stick up from the top of the dashboard, with a 7-inch screen standard and an 8-inch one optional. Despite somewhat dated-looking graphics, the systems work well enough, with prompt responses and redundant physical controls for jumping between functions or adjusting the volume and tuning the radio." -- CNET
  • "The infotainment setup is easy to use, with volume and tuning knobs and standard Apple CarPlay capability (Android Auto is not available)." -- Car and Driver

Cargo

The Toyota Corolla sedan has about 13 cubic feet of trunk space, which is a little below average for the class. The trunk lid hinges cut into usable space, and the rear seats don't fold entirely flat. The Corolla hatchback has 17.8 cubic feet of space behind its back seat and 23.3 cubic feet with the second row folded down.

  • "Cargo volume is … only a smidge better than before and behind rivals like the Honda Civic (15.1 cubic feet), Hyundai Elantra (14.4) and Volkswagen Jetta (14.1)." -- CNET
  • "Trunk space is also nothing special. Though the lid opens wide, it’s on sickle-shaped hinges that dip into the load area. The trunk itself is wide at the rear, but there’s scant under-floor space – and it’s difficult to access as there’s no handle to lift the floor. Also, the folded rear seat backs rest about five inches above the level of the cargo floor, making it tough to slide long items forward." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The trunk is roomy for a small car." -- Motor Trend
