2016 Toyota Corolla Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Toyota Corolla was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.0

The 2016 Toyota Corolla has good legroom in the back seat, and according to reviewers, the front seats are comfortable. Writers also say that Toyota has improved the Corolla’s cabin with more upscale materials. Test drivers love the optional Entune infotainment system, which they say has crisp graphics and is very easy to operate. The Corolla's trunk space is typical for the class.

  • "In our interior evaluation, we were struck by how much more upscale this new Corolla seems than its predecessor. The supple dashboard materials are much improved, and stitched accents on some panels add to the premium ambience. This is hardly business as usual for Toyota's best-seller; indeed, upscale and premium are words we've never associated with Corolla models in the past." -- AutoTrader
  • "For too long, Toyota let its compact car interiors look cheap and dated. The 2015 Corolla sedan suffers from neither problem, offering a handsome, comfortable and slightly sophisticated interior anyone would be proud to show off." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "Coming after a complete overhaul last year, the latest Corolla's restyled exterior won't exactly blow your hair back, but the fresh interior is a big step forward, bringing a newfound sense of style along with widely available niceties like a user-friendly touchscreen and automatic climate control." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "The dash top is made of a soft-touch material that feels substantial, but the door panels are all plastic except for some lightly padded bits where occupants might rest their elbows. The Dodge Dart, Ford Focus and especially the Chevrolet Cruze offer far better interior quality." -- MSN (2014)

Seating

There's seating for five in the Corolla, and options include leatherette upholstery, a power-adjustable driver seat and heated front seats. Most auto writers say the Corolla's front seats are comfortable. The Corolla S has cloth sport seats with additional side bolstering, and reviewers like the extra support. Auto writers agree that the Corolla has an impressive amount of rear-seat space, but a few wish there were more headroom.

  • "The Corolla's standard front seats provide adequate support, but the S model's sport seats stand out due to their enhanced lateral bolstering. In back, adult passengers will find unprecedented space by Corolla standards; thanks to an extra 3 inches of length, the rear seat provides almost midsize-grade accommodations." -- AutoTrader
  • The Corolla's front seats provide generally adequate comfort, particularly the S trim's better-bolstered chairs, though some may wish for more lumbar support. Also, longer-legged drivers could use more range from the telescoping steering wheel." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • There's plenty of stretch-out space in the front seats, and the long wheelbase gives rear-seat passengers world-record legroom. Rear headroom, however, is compromised by the jaunty sweep of the Corolla's C-pillar/roofline into the trunk - good to look at, but requires ducking from tall-torsoed riders in back." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • "The front Softex cloth seats are perfectly comfortable and decently supportive, and for folks confined to the rear seats, a full 5.1 inches of rear seat legroom have been added for 2014. It's a pretty good place to be." -- Autoblog (2014)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2016 Toyota Corolla include a six-speaker stereo, an Entune Audio system with a 6.1-inch touch-screen display, Siri Eyes Free iPhone integration, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a USB port. Available features include proximity key, satellite radio, automatic climate control, a rearview camera, navigation and a power moonroof.

Test drivers say the standard Entune system features straightforward on-screen menus and a crisp display, making it one of the most easy-to-use infotainment systems in the class.

  • "The Corolla's technology offerings are likewise impressive, including a standard 6.1-in touchscreen with optional smartphone-app integration from the LE trim level on up. We also appreciate that every Corolla comes with expected tech features such as iPod/USB connectivity and Bluetooth -- though if you want Bluetooth audio, the base model won't do; you'll need at least the LE." -- AutoTrader
  • "Another pleasant surprise is the 6.1-inch touchscreen interface, also standard on LE and above, which provides large virtual buttons and simple, clear graphics. The screen responds quickly to inputs, and its feature set is generous for an economy car offering." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Everything is intuitive and the display is well-organized with modern graphics. It's not as pretty as MyFord Touch, but it's certainly easier to use. That, right there, is what the whole Corolla package comes down to: ease of use." -- Autoblog (2014)
  • "Several rivals offer similar systems, and Entune is among the easier systems to operate." -- MSN (2014)

Cargo

The Toyota Corolla has 13 cubic feet of trunk space, which is average for the class. However, some competitors like the Chevrolet Cruze have slightly more space. Reviewers appreciate that the Corolla's wide trunk opening makes it easy to load and its divided center console is good for holding various small-sized items.

  • "Trunk capacity is average at 13 cubic feet, but the wide opening facilitates loading and unloading." -- Edmunds (2015)
  • "Conveniently, the center storage bin has two compartments. One that could hold a phone or tin of mints and another could store a compact box of tissues or CDs." -- Motor Trend (2014)
