2018 Toyota Corolla iM Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.2

The 2018 Toyota Corolla iM’s interior is functional and features some soft-touch materials, but there’s nothing in this Toyota that's more upscale than what you'll find in rival cabins. It does have a long list of standard features, however. The front seats have ample room, but the rear seats are a bit cramped. There’s more cargo space in the Corolla iM than in many rivals.

  • "There are plenty of soft-touch and padded surfaces, with the center console in particular featuring a cushioned area for the driver's leg covered in simulated leather." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • The all-black interior, however, is rather more enticing, yet it still fails to rise much higher than midpack in terms of design and accouterments." -- Car and Driver (2016, Scion iM)
  • There's nothing to really separate the Scion iM from the competition in terms of interior refinement or packaging. Still, the interior is an acceptable place to be; let's call it par for the course." -- Autoblog (2016, Scion iM)

Seating

The Corolla iM seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

While rivals are available with things like leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and heated front seats, the Corolla iM offers no such amenities. The front seats are comfortable and provide plenty of room for adults; the rear seats are short on head- and legroom.

There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for installing car seats. The tether and lower anchors are all easy to find and use, but you may have to move the front seats far forward to fit some rear-facing car seats.

  • Taller drivers will have enough head- and legroom, though some extra steering-wheel telescoping reach would be appreciated. The rear seat isn't as welcoming – there's merely sufficient headroom, while legroom falls below average for the segment." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "Power seats are not available, but the 6-way front buckets leave nothing to be desired in comfort or lateral support. And while rear legroom can't measure up to rivals like the Mazda3, Kia Rio5 and Volkswagen Golf on paper, the Corolla iM's rear quarters feel plenty roomy in the outboard seating positions." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "I'm just less than 6 feet tall and with the driver's seat in my normal driving position, my knees were firmly touching the front seat in both models when I sat in the rear. Rear headroom was barely enough for me to sit upright without my head touching the ceiling." -- Cars.com (2016, Scion iM)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Corolla iM include dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch touch-screen audio display, a six-speaker Pioneer stereo, Bluetooth phone and audio, a USB port, HD Radio, and Aha, which provides access to Facebook, Twitter, and more than 100,000 free internet radio stations. A dealer-installed navigation system is also available.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera and Toyota's Safety Sense C, which includes pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams.

The iM has no shortage of standard features. The touch screen is user-friendly and responds quickly to inputs. It’s also easy to reach from the driver’s seat. There are physical controls for some audio and climate functions, and the Pioneer audio system delivers terrific sound quality.

  • "Boasting an edgy-yet-tasteful layout, the Corolla iM's cockpit emphasizes functionality. The audio and climate controls are as straightforward as they come." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "We're also fans of the standard 7-inch touchscreen: It's is easy to reach, features sensible menus and is very quick to react. Standard dual-zone automatic climate control is another nice touch." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The infotainment system responds quickly to touch menu commands, the Bluetooth takes just seconds to set up, and the speakers' sound quality rivals that of some premium European cars." -- Motor Trend (2016, Scion iM)

Cargo

The Corolla iM has 20.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats, which is more space than many compact hatchbacks provide. The split-folding rear seats give you the flexibility to haul larger items, and they fold nearly flat, providing a nice loading floor. There are also under-floor storage bins that you can use to keep items out of sight.

  • "Cargo capacity measures a modest 20.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats, but the cargo area is usefully wide, and the upright hatch and fold-down seatbacks provide extra space for bulkier items." -- Edmunds (2017)
  • "The iM's cargo area is fairly large and quite versatile, with folded rear seat backs that lie nearly flat and level with the floor in back, which has some 'hidden' storage beneath it." -- Consumer Guide (2016, Scion iM)
