2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.1

The 2021 Toyota Camry Hybrid’s cabin has a mix of soft and hard plastics, such as on the doors and center dashboard. Higher trims are more luxurious. The seats are roomy, and the infotainment system is easy to use. Trunk space is average.

  • "The 2021 Camry’s 5-passenger cabin is an excellent blend of comfort, technology, style, and practicality. As a whole, it functions very well with no unnecessary fluff." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "We've driven the Camry in both top-level XLE guise and in its more plebeian SE trim. Both are spacious and comfortable, and the XLE is downright luxurious. However, there's a serious gap in material quality between the entry-level models and the more expensive versions, and the center part of the dashboard left some of us cold with its uninspired design." -- Car and Driver
  • "Soft-touch surfaces abound, and they look and feel good. The Camry's design and variety of textures won't be mistaken for those of a luxury car, but they're attractive without sacrificing functionality." -- Edmunds (2019)

Cargo

The Toyota Camry Hybrid matches the gas-only Camry’s 15.1-cubic-foot trunk. That’s about average for the hybrid and electric car class, and it’s ample space for most shopping needs. The wide trunk opening and split-folding rear seats are pluses.

  • "The Camry is a large sedan, and there's plenty of cargo space and interior storage in both its trunk and in its cabin with the rear seat folded. It's not the best in every storage category, but overall, it's thoroughly competitive. Toyota relocated the Camry hybrid's battery from the trunk to beneath the rear seats, so hybrid owners don't have to sacrifice carrying capacity for the extra mpg." -- Car and Driver
  • "Moving the battery out of the trunk also means the Hybrid now matches the regular Camry's sizable cargo capacity." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • "The Hybrid has the same trunk size as any other Camry. Loading most items is easy thanks to a wide opening and a low liftover height. The Hybrid's rear seats fold to expand trunk space even more." -- Edmunds (2019)

Seating

Five people can sit in the Camry Hybrid. Cloth upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat are standard. Other available features include synthetic or genuine leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Both rows have a good amount of space, and two average-sized adults can fit in the back without issue. The front seats are supportive, and the driver’s seat is well-positioned, but it can be tricky for taller people to enter or exit the car because of its low stature.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. A lower anchor can be borrowed from either side. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this setup the highest rating of Good+ for its ease of use. The "+" indicates that it's among the easiest systems to use.

  • "The Camry has a boldly designed dash composed of asymmetrical swoops and curves, a set of nicely bolstered front bucket seats, and a spacious rear seat." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Front access is provided by large openings but being low to the ground makes getting in and out a bit awkward. The front seats are not luxurious, but they're good, basic seats. There were few complaints from the testers about our seats with two-way lumbar adjustment. Generous floor space in the rear makes getting in and out easier." -- Consumer Reports (2020)
  • "Literally sitting behind the wheel feels different in this newest Camry as well, as a lower seating position with a more thoughtfully placed wheel, shifter and other controls result in a more driver-oriented cabin. … In terms of overall space, the Camry Hybrid is one of the largest midsize sedans, but can't quite match the palatial back seat and trunk of the Honda Accord." -- Autotrader (2019)

Interior Features

The Camry Hybrid comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, a 7-inch touch screen, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, and two USB ports.

The Entune 3.0 infotainment system is easy to use. There are plenty of physical controls placed within easy reach of the driver, and the touch screen is responsive, though a few critics note that the resolution on the larger screen could be crisper.

Also standard is Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5, which bundles adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane trace assist, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist.

A 9-inch touch screen is available, as are navigation, a nine-speaker JBL stereo, and wireless device charging. Additionally, you can get a moonroof, a 10-inch head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and a surround-view parking camera system.

  • "We like that the Camry retains easy-to-use buttons and knobs for common functions like volume, tuning, and changing audio tracks." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Toyota's touchscreen infotainment system—called Entune 3.0—is standard across the Camry lineup, with an enhanced version available as an option. Entune has loads of features and responded reasonably well to user inputs in our tests, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are standard." -- Car and Driver
  • "The entire middle of the dashboard is redesigned to accommodate this new display, which measures 9 inches on my Hybrid XLE tester, although lower trims make do with just 7 inches. Either way, it's prominent, and the new look still packs the same physical buttons for the climate control, which are easy to reach and use with little distraction." -- CNET
