2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid was new.

Interior: 7.8

The interior of the 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid is as comfortable as it is practical. The cushy seats give you plenty of room to stretch out. Apple CarPlay makes its debut in the Camry Hybrid for 2019, along with Amazon Alexa. These two newly standard features add to an already long features list, which includes a suite of advanced safety technologies as well. The Camry Hybrid also has one of the largest trunks you'll find in a midsize hybrid.

  • "Soft-touch surfaces abound, and they look and feel good. The Camry's design and variety of textures won't be mistaken for those of a luxury car, but they're attractive without sacrificing functionality." -- Edmunds
  • "Inside you'll find a cabin that still ranks as midsize even though there's 2.8 cubic feet less interior space. Not that you'd notice sitting in an interior fit for an Audi or a Lexus. Highly contoured yet enveloping seats in cloth, SofTex microfiber, quilted or ventilated leather, a driver-centric instrument panel and asymmetrical console, trim available in layered wood, embossed mesh, Tiger Eye wood or textured metal and a rich color palette with names like Ash, Macadamia and Cockpit Red do their best to make you forget you may have chosen the Camry Hybrid for its fuel-thrifty tendencies." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "Top-spec models enjoy padded surfaces, soft-touch plastics, and attractive graining, some of which is preserved for mid-level trims, although these get hard-plastic door panels and a cheaper-feeling steering wheel." -- Car and Driver (2018)

The Camry Hybrid can seat five people. It's a comfortable place to spend the day, with lots of acreage for everyone and a driver's seat that accommodates a variety of body sizes. Visibility is splendid all around.

Heated front seats, cloth upholstery, and an eight-way power adjustable driver's seat are standard. Upper trim levels come with either synthetic leather or genuine leather seats, and the top-of-the-line XLE comes with a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

The Camry Hybrid makes an excellent car for parents and those who shuttle children. Its LATCH system earns a Good+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for ease of use. The rear seat has three tether anchors and two sets of lower anchors, and the hardware is easily identifiable and accessible.

  • "Front and rear passengers have ample space around them. Taller drivers won't impinge on rear passenger legroom, and headroom for the rear seat is ample for average-size adults. The front of the cabin is airy and spacious." -- Edmunds
  • "Slide into the Camry's redesigned cabin and you're greeted with decent visibility, thanks to slim pillars and ample side glass. The driving position is roomy, with good headroom and nicely padded, spacious front seats that deliver ample support for long drives." -- Consumer Reports (2018)
  • "The nearly two-inch-longer wheelbase helps preserve interior roominess, including generous rear-seat legroom and knee clearance, even as engineers lowered the roof and the seating position. They also lowered the hood and the beltline to avoid the feeling of sitting in the bottom of a barrel." -- Car and Driver (2018)

Interior Features

The Camry Hybrid uses Toyota's latest iteration of its Entune infotainment system. It's faster and more responsive than the previous editions, though it may still take you a little time to familiarize yourself with it. Entune 3.0 sees even more improvements for 2019, with the addition of Apple CarPlay and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Amazon Alexa is also standard, giving you the ability to adjust your home's lights and climate from your car, or start your car and check the gas gauge from inside your house. Six speakers, a 7-inch touch screen, Siri Eyes Free, a USB port, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and navigation (via Scout GPS Link) are also part of Entune 3.0.

Other standard features on the Camry Hybrid include dual-zone automatic climate control, a proximity key, and push-button start. In addition to a rearview camera, every Camry Hybrid comes with Toyota Safety Sense P (also called TSS-P). This suite of safety equipment contains a pre-collision system, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, and full-speed adaptive cruise control. Available safety features include a 360-degree Bird's Eye View camera, emergency rear braking, adaptive headlights, a head-up display, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

An upgraded Entune interface is available, adding an 8-inch touch screen, additional USB charge ports, advanced voice recognition, satellite radio, and HD Radio. Other Camry Hybrid options include a nine-speaker JBL sound system, navigation, wireless charging for enable smartphones, a moonroof, and ambient lighting.

  • "The Camry's infotainment system can be a bit annoying to use, but Toyota has added Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa (no Android Auto yet) to the mix this year, which should help out a little." -- Edmunds
  • "From a user's perspective, Entune 3.0 is faster to respond than before, making the system far more pleasurable to use. For all versions, Toyota continues to employ separate climate controls beneath the display screen, and has replaced gray buttons with classy looking chrome tabs that give the dashboard an air of sophistication. The upgraded versions of Entune 3.0 look more modern and sophisticated." -- New York Daily News (2018)
  • "Also new is Toyota's latest touchscreen interface dubbed Entune 3. Available in standard 7-in and optional 8-in sizes, it responds better to inputs and features better graphics with more easily pressed icons. A decent Scout GPS navigation app that streams from your smartphone comes standard along with additional apps." -- Autotrader (2018)

You don't lose out on any trunk space by opting for the Camry Hybrid over its nonhybrid twin. That's unusual for a hybrid car, as many automakers shrink the trunks of their nonhybrid sedans to make room for a battery pack in the hybrid version. The Camry Hybrid's 15.1-cubic-foot trunk is exceptionally spacious for a hybrid sedan, and it has a low liftover height for easier loading. A 60/40 split folding rear seat is standard.

  • "The Hybrid has the same trunk size as any other Camry. Loading most items is easy thanks to a wide opening and a low liftover height. The Hybrid's rear seats fold to expand trunk space even more." -- Edmunds
  • "The trunk is wide at the rear and quite roomy, and though the trunklid opens wide to create a large opening, its sickle-shaped hinges dip into the load space a bit. Also, the folded rear seat backs rest about seven inches above the level of the trunk floor, making it tougher to slide long items forward. Although the previous Hybrid model sacrificed some trunk volume and most of the trunk pass-through area to its battery, the 2018 version has essentially the same trunk space as the gas models, as the battery is mounted in the center tunnel." -- Consumer Guide (2018)
  • "Either battery pack, however, is now located under the back seat. This allows the Hybrid to have the same 15.1 cu ft. trunk as the non-hybrid and moves the car's center of gravity lower and toward the middle of the car." -- Autotrader (2018)
