2021 Toyota C-HR Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 5.8

The 2021 Toyota C-HR's cabin is filled with easy-to-use infotainment technology, as well as adult-friendly seating in both rows. You'll find some hard plastics, but most of the interior materials are of good quality. Cargo space is limited, however, and rear visibility is poor.

  • "The interior is visually delightful, with little diamond-shaped touches spread throughout adding subtle flair without being gimmicky. The dash is also handsomely modern, the interior materials are above average for the price, and the upgraded safety features this year are remarkable for the class." -- Autotrader
  • "The interior design is less eye-catching than the outside of the C-HR, but that’s no bad thing. Some diamond patterns on the dashboard, doors, and headliner echo the C-HR’s extrovert vibe." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Except for a pair of cheap plastic panels on either side of the center console, the materials throughout the interior seem well chosen and durable. A faux-leather dash with simulated stitching looks upscale, while diamond-patterned plastic on the doors and similarly patterned headliner accents add a bit of fun to the mix. In low-light situations, the trim used on the dashboard of our XLE test car appeared to be standard-issue piano black, but in direct sunlight, a metallic glaze shone through—a nice surprise. Overall, the cabin has a very youthful appeal." -- Car and Driver

Cargo

The C-HR has a below-average cargo capacity among subcompact SUVs, and a high cargo floor can make it hard to load your items. There's 19 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats and 36.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

  • "Cargo space is similarly limited for the class, with 19 cubic feet behind the rear seats, or 36.4 when they’re folded down. And the loadspace floor is quite high." -- Autotrader
  • "At 19 cubic feet, cargo volume is only average, but the seats fold to provide 36.4 cubic feet." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It should come as no surprise that subcompact crossovers are limited when it comes to cargo capacity, but the C-HR has one of the smallest maximum spaces in the class. You'd be better off thinking of it as a raised hatchback rather than a crossover." -- Edmunds (2019)

Seating

Up to five people can sit inside this two-row SUV. Both the first and second rows are good on space. However, the rear quarters do not feel welcoming due to that zone's thick roof pillars and tiny rear windows.

Standard comfort features include cloth upholstery and six-way manually adjustable front seats. Optional features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat.

For installing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. All connectors are easy to find and use. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the C-HR's LATCH system the highest rating of Good for its ease of use.

  • "On the downside, that individual exterior styling hinders rearward vision. Over-the-shoulder glances will give a view only of the dark interior and the front-side windows seem too low – or perhaps the driving position is too high. The thick rear pillars may also make rear passengers feel claustrophobic." -- Autotrader
  • "Because it rides on the same platform as the larger Camry sedan, the C-HR has plenty of interior room for folks of all sizes. Rear-seat headroom is surprisingly good, although it does feel a bit dark and dreary due to the car’s large door pillars." -- Kelley Blue Book (2020)
  • "There's more interior space than you'd expect from such a small crossover. There's plenty of room up front in all dimensions. The rear seats can indeed hold regular adults in decent comfort." -- Edmunds (2019)

Interior Features

The C-HR comes standard with a user-friendly infotainment system. Its 8-inch touch screen is mounted high on the dash and features an intuitive menu layout that makes it easy to operate while driving. There are also physical buttons for audio and climate functions.

Other standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, a USB port, satellite radio, six speakers, voice recognition, a Wi-Fi hot spot, remote keyless entry, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Several advanced safety features are also standard, including a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane tracing assist, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, and road sign assist.

Available features include HD Radio, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

  • "The cabin is stylish and upscale, and its features list is huge, including an excellent 8-in infotainment touchscreen." -- Autotrader
  • "An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system stands tall atop the C-HR's sculpted dashboard. … It's a basic system and eschews visual beauty for uncomplicated menus that are easy to use on the go—and even those with minimal technological experience should feel comfortable using it." -- Car and Driver
  • "The touchscreen mounted atop the dash is easy to read at a glance and operate with minimal distraction, too." -- Edmunds (2019)
