Buying Advice

Last Updated: November 7, 2019

Falling Sales: The Avalon was fully redesigned for 2019, but shoppers have yet to show much interest. While it’s selling in the middle of the large car segment, dealerships have moved 16 percent fewer Avalon models to date this year relative to 2018.

High Base Price: A base Avalon starts at $35,800, which is about $5,000 above the class average; much higher than budget-friendly rivals like the Chevy Impala ($28,020). On the other hand, an upper trim Avalon starts about $3,000 below the segment average for fully-loaded trims.

Time to Buy: Considering the Avalon’s declining sales this year, you may be able to find bargains at the dealership. This month's Toyota deals may further help your bottom line. If you’re on a tight budget, consider the highly-ranked Kia Cadenza. The Cadenza – like the Avalon to the Lexus ES – is very similar to its luxury corporate cousin, the Genesis G80, but sports a much lower price at $33,100. Also, the Cadenza has some of the lowest sales in the class, meaning you can likely negotiate the price even lower.
