2020 Toyota Avalon Interior Review

Interior: 7.4

The 2020 Toyota Avalon has a stylish cabin with quality materials. There’s generous seating space for adults in both rows, and the seats are comfortable and supportive. The Avalon also earns praise for its user-friendly infotainment system and large suite of standard safety features.

  • "Even lower trims of the Avalon boast above-average fit and finish, while top-line trims with features like quilted leather paneling could pass for a vehicle by Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The spacious cabin has an upscale feel, featuring soft materials with intricate stitching and attractive open-pore wood trim. The leather upholstery on our sample vehicles is more supple than what's found in most mainstream brand models." -- Consumer Reports (2019)
  • "Materials and overall interior quality are strengths of all Avalons, from the XLE to the Limited. Limited models are better outfitted with new open-pore wood trim pieces and some very supple leather … that wouldn't be out of place in a luxury sedan. But even the more modestly equipped XLE has nicely wrapped leatherette (imitation leather) seats, while the XSE and Touring add suede inserts. It felt the part of a premium sedan to me, even on lower grades." -- Cars.com (2019)

The 2020 Avalon is a four-door sedan with five seats. Synthetic leather upholstery is standard, along with heated and power-adjustable front seats. Genuine leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats are available.

The front seats are nicely contoured. They provide good head- and legroom, even for tall occupants, though that's less true in Avalon models with the available sunroof. The back seat is similarly spacious, and it can accommodate adults comfortably, even on longer trips.

For installing child safety seats, there are two full sets of LATCH connectors in the Avalon.

  • "We also pleasure in the roominess of the cabin -- Toyota claims best-in-class room for your shoulders, knees and noggin -- and the first-class feel of the materials anywhere our hands or fingers landed." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The stretched wheelbase gives backseat passengers extra legroom, not that it needed it. It's a seriously large backseat with plenty of legroom and headroom. The backseat is a place I could spend a few hours comfortably, and there are even two USB ports (five total in the car) on the back of the center storage bin to keep my phone topped off." -- Cars.com (2019)
  • "The front seats are pleasantly comfortable, with little side bolstering for easy entry and exit and four-way lumbar adjustment on the Limited and Touring models. There's excellent legroom all around and more than enough headroom in the back. Headroom in the front is decent, though taller drivers may find their hair brushing the headliner if you select a trim with the sunroof." -- Edmunds (2019)

Interior Features

The 2020 Avalon comes standard with a 9-inch Entune touch screen, Apple CarPlay (but not Android Auto), Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, four USB ports, eight speakers, HD Radio, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Available features include navigation, a 14-speaker JBL stereo, a Qi wireless charging pad, and a moonroof.

The Avalon’s standard safety features include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist. Available safety features include front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera system, rear cross traffic braking, and a head-up display.

Overall, the Avalon earns praise for its Entune infotainment system. The touch screen has simple menus and an array of physical buttons and knobs for the audio and climate controls, making it easy to adjust settings on the go. On the other hand, the optional navigation system feels outdated, and it tends to respond slowly to inputs.

  • "The Avalon is at once roomy and refined, tech-forward yet still simple enough to use even by seasoned drivers. All models feature a prominent 9-inch touch-screen display with redundant physical controls. We also like that the Avalon has a traditional gearshift rather than buttons, dials or some other method deemed futuristic." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The software overhaul makes Entune much easier to use and understand, but it's still not my favorite tech suite on the road. Responsiveness could still use some sharpening -- the lag after a tap is still just perceptible. And while Apple CarPlay [gives] iOS users an easy software alternative, Android users are left out due to a lack of Android Auto compatibility." -- CNET (2019)
  • "The 2018 model … had a poor multimedia experience, and now there's a larger standard 9-inch touchscreen that's mounted in a better position with newly standard Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa connectivity. The outgoing model had a weirdly shaped wireless charging tray that wouldn't fit larger phones, and now there's a bigger tray that even accommodated my giant Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus (with a case on it as well). … the weird, touch-sensitive climate controls that didn't work when wearing certain gloves has been banished, replaced by good, old-fashioned physical controls. I still have my own issues with the multimedia system. Toyota's optional native navigation is a mess with old-looking graphics and a lack of intuitive structure. It took two of us a few minutes to figure out how to turn off the navigation route we were on and enter a new one." -- Cars.com (2019)

The 2020 Avalon has 16.1 cubic feet of trunk space. That's about average for the large car class. The rear seats fold down in a 60/40 split, giving you the flexibility to carry bulkier items.

  • "At over 16 cubic feet, the trunk is spacious, and fold-down rear seats add to the practicality." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Cargo room in the trunk area isn't as expansive as the Avalon's exterior size would suggest. … But the seats now do fold down to store longer items, and on hybrid models the battery has been moved so it has the same cargo dimensions as the gas vehicle." -- Cars.com (2019)
