  • Roomy, upscale cabin
  • Sloppy handling

2012 Toyota Avalon Overview

Reviewers thought that the 2012 Avalon’s standard V6 engine has plenty of power, and its six-speed automatic transmission is remarkably smooth and responsive. The 2012 Toyota Avalon gets an EPA-estimated 19/28 mpg city/highway, which is good for the class. Test drivers noted that the Avalon has a comfortable, well-controlled ride, but they were less impressed with its numb steering. Additionally, some critics added that body roll keeps the Avalon from feeling agile when the road gets twisty.

While some thought the cabin looks a bit dated, most automotive journalists said the 2012 Toyota Avalon has a spacious, quiet cabin built with high-end materials. Reviewers praised the Avalon’s comfortable front seats, and many said the reclining back seat is among the most spacious and comfortable in the class. At 14.4 cubic feet, the Avalon’s trunk is smaller than average for the class. Most reviewers said the buttons and knobs in the Avalon are well-laid-out and clearly labeled. Standard features in the 2012 Avalon include a moonroof, a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a nine-speaker audio system, satellite radio, a USB/iPod input and Bluetooth. Available features include proximity key, push-button start, heated and ventilated front seats, a power rear sunshade, a 12-speaker JBL audio system and a touch-screen navigation system.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2012 Buick LaCrosse is available with all-wheel drive, or as an eAssist model that gets great fuel economy for the class. Additionally, reviewers appreciated the LaCrosse’s comfortable ride and upscale interior.

According to critics, the 2012 Ford Taurus has roomy seating, as well as a smooth ride and composed handling. The Taurus is also available with all-wheel drive, and it has one of the largest trunks in the class.
