2011 Toyota Avalon Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2011 Toyota Avalon was new.

Interior: 8.5

The Avalon’s interior continues to impress reviewers. It offers loads of space to stretch out, comfortable seats, standard luxury features like leather seating and dual-zone climate control, and top-notch build quality. One complaint however does exist – the stereo’s “tune” knob is just a little too far away from the driver. But, with available steering wheel mounted audio controls, this may not be a big issue.

  • "The big changes are inside, where last year’s Elks Club interior has been remodeled along the lines of a Ruth’s Chris Steak House." -- New York Times
  • "The cushy armrests are welcome, but we were surprised at the rough-textured leather on the steering wheel, the one part of the car that you're touching all the time (the Avalon Limited has a wood steering wheel rim)." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The interior has some pizzazz, considering the mixture of top-quality materials such as wood, stainless and leather." -- AutoWeek

Reviewers love the Avalon's class-leading space and comfortable seats, and note that rear seat passengers have almost as much space as front seat passengers -- the rear seats even recline.

  • "All the seats are flat and thickly padded, and the ones in the rear even recline a bit. All passengers have room to stretch their legs and the carpeting is so plush they might opt to go barefoot." -- New York Times
  • "The real revelation is the back seat, with its near limo-like 40.9 inches of legroom and reclining seatbacks." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The seats were comfortable for the long haul, but I would have liked more adjustability of the seatback." -- AutoWeek
  • "Full-size adults will have no problem sitting behind like-size adults. Large door openings help make entry and exit easy. Reclining rear seats are an unexpected bonus in this class." -- Consumer Guide

Interior Features

The interior of the 2011 Toyota Avalon boasts many creature comforts and driver aids, and few reviewers have anything negative to say about them. They do, however, note that the “tune” knob on the stereo is placed out of reach of some drivers -- though available steering wheel mounted audio controls do help alleviate this. Still, with standard features such as leather seating, dual-zone climate control, a back-up camera and a power moonroof, reviewers are in agreement that the Avalon comes well equipped.

  • "All the controls are logically arrayed - including 14 switches or knobs to operate the navigation and sound systems, and 10 buttons integrated into the steering wheel." -- New York Times
  • "When I went to change the radio station, I found that I had to reach way over to the other side of the navigation screen to hit the seek button." -- AutoWeek
  • "Generally high-quality materials line Avalon's interior, and assembly quality is to premium-car standards. The staff continues to balk at the cheap, fuzzy material used for Avalon's cabin headliner." – Consumer Guide

The Avalon offers 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Once, that was considered excellent, but today there are smaller cars with larger trunks. A pass-through gap allows long, thin items to be stored, but the rear seatbacks do not fold. Storage space in the passenger cabin itself is abundant.

  • "Its 14.4 cubic feet is actually fractionally less than that of the Camry, and is somewhat disappointing for such a big car." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The trunk is sufficiently sized for most family excursions, though intrusion from the lid hinges can complicate packing.” -- Consumer Guide
