2019 Toyota 4Runner Interior Review

Interior: 6.3

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner has a simple cabin layout with materials of various qualities. It offers lots of passenger and cargo space, but both of those diminish with the addition of optional third-row seats. Infotainment features function well but can be hard to use.

  • "The cabin layout in the 2019 4Runner is simple but effective. Buttons and dials are large and easy to use, even when selecting the low-range gearing. The center console has the option of a 120-volt outlet. The power-adjustable front seats are comfortable and supportive, fine for longer trips, while the reclining 2nd-row seats split and fold in a 40/20/40 configuration for some passenger/cargo versatility." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There is, however, a big helping of hard plastic surfaces in the 4Runner. Most of the dash is constructed from it and various controls feel hollow and cheap. In a midsize SUV with a price tag in the $30,000 range, this cheaper material is easier to accept, but in something with an as-tested price of $40,725, it's a bit of a letdown." -- CNET (2018)
  • "The 4Runner has tight gaps outside and an attractive interior. The leather upholstery looks good and should hold up over the long haul, even if it spends most of its time off-roading." -- Edmunds (2018)

The Toyota 4Runner seats five people in standard configuration, while an optional third row increases capacity to seven. Cloth upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a leather-trimmed tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel are standard. Options include leatherette seats, real leather upholstery, a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, and ventilated front seats. The 4Runner has two complete sets of rear LATCH connections and a tether anchor for the middle seat. The tether anchors could be confused for other hardware, and the lower anchors are set deep in the seats. Passenger space and comfort in the 4Runner’s first two rows is good, but the optional third row is too small for most adult passengers.

  • "The broad cushions and seatbacks offer a wide surface area for long-distance comfort, although lumbar support feels overly firm. With the optional third-row seating package, the second-row seats can slide and recline, but the third row is for kids only or short trips with average-size adults." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Fabric seats are far from luxurious, but comfy with serviceable legroom for passengers in both the first and second rows." -- CNET (2018)
  • "Although rather simple, the … 4Runner's cabin is roomy and versatile. … The power-adjustable front seats are comfortable and supportive. … Seven-passenger seating is available in SR5 and Limited trims, though the small third row is best suited for children." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2019 4Runner include a 120-volt power outlet, a rearview camera, and a 6.1-inch touch-screen infotainment system with an eight-speaker stereo, a USB port, Bluetooth, HD Radio, and satellite radio. Optional features include dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity key entry, push-button start, a moonroof, navigation, the Entune app suite, a 15-speaker premium JBL stereo, and front and rear parking sensors.

The 4Runner’s touch screen responds quickly to inputs and processes commands, but the small screen hinders its effectiveness. Large buttons for audio and climate controls are clearly labeled and placed within easy reach of the driver.

  • "The 4Runner's large dials and buttons operating everything from the radio to the low-range gearing are a cinch to use." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The infotainment system falls flat. Far better systems are available in Toyota's passenger cars, so there's no excuse for cheaping out on the 4Runner. Functionality is just OK. The system looks dated, feels dated and is dated, which could be a real deal-breaker, especially with better infotainment available in competitors." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "Quarterbacking cabin infotainment is Toyota's Entune system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, navigation, Bluetooth, eight-speaker sound system and satellite radio making up the light technology offerings. Touchscreen response is swift and navigation route calculations happen quickly, but overall the system is subpar, lacking noteworthy features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Pinpoint accuracy is also necessary when trying to hit the tiny icons on the small screen -- you'll find yourself hitting the wrong buttons more often than you'd like." -- CNET (2018)

The 4Runner has 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind its second row and up to 89.7 cubic feet with the second row folded down. Both of those values are among the highest in the class. Models with the optional third row only have 9 cubic feet behind the seat, which is the lowest amount in the class. The back seats fold flat and the cargo hold is square and wide.

  • "In the trunk area, there's an optional sliding cargo deck for quick and easy loading and unloading of items. You'll be able to carry a lot of stuff, too, with 46.3 cubic-feet of space behind the rear seat -- that's more than the Grand Cherokee's 36.3. If that's not enough, folding the rear seats flat opens up 88.8 cubic-feet of real estate to swallow camping gear or the bounty from warehouse club shopping expeditions." -- CNET (2018)
  • "Toyota's … 4Runner SUV features a power-retractable rear window incorporated into the rear liftgate. Lowering the window allows cargo or gear to more easily be loaded into the cargo bay." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)
  • "The rear seatbacks fold flat, and it's easy to pack the sizable cargo hold (88.8 cubic feet with seats down; 46.3 cubic feet with seats up) because of its squarish shape. Car campers will love it since it's easy to stretch out a couple of sleeping bags in the back. The cargo floor is almost but not quite flat." -- Edmunds (2018)
