Speed Rating M – Temporary Spare Tire – 81 mph

Example: 2017 Honda Civic Sedan

If your car came with a temporary spare, the chances are it carries the “M” speed rating, which means it is good for speeds of up to 81 mph. That, however, is academic.

Most vehicle manufacturers call for a top speed of 50 mph when the temporary spare is pressed into service, in part to minimize potentially excessive wear to drivetrain components. For the same reason, most automakers want you to limit the distance traveled on a temporary spare to 50 miles.
