Chevrolet Volt

Perhaps the most unique and innovative PHEV on the market, the Chevrolet Volt, functions for 53 miles as an all-electric before the gas engine kicks in. With the gas engine running, the Volt has a whopping 420 miles of total range. It has become the quintessential example of what a PHEV should be, with a substantial electric range, making it possible for the typical driver to commute without ever engaging the gas engine.

Range anxiety is nearly non-existent in a Volt. The range-extending engine is present if needed, and it works to charge the battery while driving. The Volt is the only EV on the market that is truly part electric car and part hybrid. It has one of the longest all-electric ranges of any hybrid ever produced, coming close to some all-electrics on the market that don’t offer the range-extending gas engine.

The Chevrolet Volt premiered in 2010, and has become the first mass-marketed, mainstream PHEV success, with over 100,000 sold. A 2016 Chevy Volt starts around $33,000 before any incentives.
