Safety is a top consideration for most car shoppers. Those choosing an SUV over a car may rank safety even higher on their list of priorities, since larger, heavier vehicles tend to perform better in crash tests. Many SUV buyers are also purchasing with the entire family in mind, so the vehicle’s crashworthiness takes monumental precedence.

We use crash test data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to help determine U.S. News safety scores.

The NHTSA performs frontal and side crash tests, as well as a rollover simulation, which are rated on a five-star scale. The IIHS has a more involved process consisting of at least five various crash tests, headlight tests, and front crash protection assessments. Its scoring system consists of Good, Acceptable, Marginal, and Poor ratings.

The IIHS also designates the best cars in each class as either a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+. According to the Institute:

“To qualify for 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.”

The above requirements are also true of 2018 Top Safety Pick+ candidates, although only a Good rating for a car’s headlights will secure it the honor.

Keep in mind that just because a subcompact SUV earns high crash test ratings doesn’t necessarily mean it will keep you as safe as a comparably rated midsize SUV, since larger vehicles generally perform better in accidents.

U.S. News scores change periodically as new expert reviews and data become available. The safety scores in this slideshow may not match those in our rankings. Check out our individual vehicle reviews for up-to-date information on safety.
