The Original Pony Car

April 17, 1964 is a day that is celebrated across America by enthusiasts, especially in Dearborn, Michigan. That’s the day the Ford Mustang was unveiled at the New York World’s Fair. The four-seat sports car was an instant hit, selling well over a million cars in its first two years of production.

The new Mustang was not only a sales success, it created an entirely new category of cars – the pony car. Competitors from Chrysler, GM, and AMC followed within a few years, all aping Ford’s formula. Ford, for their part, continued evolving the Mustang, and now, fifty-plus years later, Ford has offered six distinct generations of their iconic pony car.
