2009-2014 Scion xD

If you need to drive farther than the Nissan Leaf can go in a day and still need ultra-cheap, ultra-reliable transportation, check out the Scion xD

When it was new, the xD offered optional features almost unheard of in an economy car: satellite radio and built-in navigation. The tradeoff is that this Scion is cramped inside. Large drivers will not be happy.

The xD is happiest in the city, where it has decent acceleration for a subcompact and its compliant ride helps soak up bumps and ruts. Highways are not its forte. The engine is buzzy at speed and feels overwhelmed. Neither are twisty back roads, where the Scion's soft suspension and numb steering sap handling responsiveness. At least it's fairly fuel efficient, with EPA ratings of 26 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway with the automatic transmission. Stick-shift versions get one more mpg.
