Strong Performance, With the Promise of More to Come

The Tesla Model 3 uses a single electric motor that powers the rear wheels of the sedan. Tesla reports that it can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds with the standard battery pack, or 5.1 seconds with the long-range battery.

Based on power consumption information in an EPA report, Motor Trend has crunched the numbers to determine that the motor in the long-range Model 3 produces about 258 horsepower. Tesla has not confirmed a horsepower figure for the car.

The top speed of the base model is 130 mph, while the long-range Model 3 tops out at 140 mph.

A higher-performance model with two motors and all-wheel drive is expected next year, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
