2013 Suzuki SX4 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2013 Suzuki SX4 was new.

Interior: 7.1

The 2013 Suzuki SX4 has a high seating position and good cargo space in its sedan and hatchback models. Some reviewers think the SX4 trails its classmates because the cabin looks dated and is made with cheap materials. The SX4 also doesn’t have as many standard features as competitors.

  • "Cabin materials are appropriate for the price. Nothing particularly surprises or delights, but there are no disappointments either." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The … Suzuki SX4's cabin falls short of much of its competition, with an aging design and lower-quality materials defining much of the interior." -- Edmunds (2012)

Test drivers like that the SX4’s front seats have good headroom, but say there may not be enough legroom for tall adults. However, they think the tall driving position benefits the driver because he or she will have good forward visibility. One test driver finds, however, that the front pillars are thick, which can make it difficult to see around corners. Reviewers also say there’s plenty of head- and legroom for two adults to fit comfortably in the rear seats.

  • "Legroom is subcompact typical. Headroom is especially impressive, and the tall seating position is a boon for visibility, at least for the most part. The front roof pillars are on the thick side, which compromises the view around corners. With the manual transmission, the pedals are a bit too close together." -- Consumer Guide
  • "For one, its elevated seating position favors shorter drivers; medium to tall folk might bemoan a lack of legroom and a telescoping steering wheel." -- Edmunds (2012, front seats)
  • "The backseat is workable for adults, both in terms of headroom and legroom." -- Cars.com (2012)
  • "The well-bolstered front seats are unusually supportive and comfortable. The SX4 is also tall for a compact, so you sit up higher and have better visibility than in most small cars." --BusinessWeek (2008)
  • "Two rear-seat passengers will find ample head- and legroom, although five adults would be a crowd." -- MSN (2008)

Interior Features

The base SX4 sedan comes with a four-speaker audio system. Higher trims and hatchback and crossover models offer optional features such as a USB port, Bluetooth and a touch-screen navigation system.

Some members of the automotive press are disappointed with the SX4’s skimpy list of standard features. Though there aren’t many standard tech items, reviewers like that the controls are simple and straightforward.

  • "The dashboard holds clear gauges and handy controls. The navigation system that's standard on certain models is a Garmin-brand unit that pops up from the top of the dashboard, just out of easy reach. Its screen is on the small side, making it tough to decipher at a glance." -- Consumer Guide
  • "On the plus side, the gauges are easy to read and the controls are intuitive to operate." -- Edmunds (2012)
  • "I did find the approach to the Garmin display to be a bit odd. It looked disconnected, and I wish it were considered more in the overall design of the center stack." -- AutoWeek (2011, SX4 Crossover)
  • "The controls are straightforward to figure out and easy to use." -- BusinessWeek (2008)

SX4 sedans have 15.5 cubic feet of trunk space, which is good for the class. The Crossover and Sportback GTS models offer 16 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in use. It expands to 51.8 cubic feet when the rear seat is folded down. Auto critics appreciate the amount of room the SX4 sedan and hatchback models provide, saying there’s more cargo room than they expected.

  • "The sedan has a roomy trunk for the car's exterior size. Hatchbacks have very good cargo room, aided by convenient under-floor storage. Cabin storage is useful, but there's not a lot of it." -- Consumer Guide
  • "But last night a Costco run was on the schedule, and I was interested to see how the SX4 handled it. Much to my surprise, there was a lot more room in the trunk than I thought. Nice." -- AutoWeek (2011, SX4 Crossover)
