2009 Suzuki SX4 Overview

The 2009 Suzuki SX4 model line comes in hatchback, sedan and crossover body styles. Each SX4 has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and reviewers said that its low curb weight and crisp handling make the SX4 a small car that’s also fun to drive. The SX4 sedan averages up to 23/31 mpg city/highway, which is a bit low for the class. If you choose the all-wheel drive crossover, you’ll average less.

The base SX4 sedan has a skimpy list of standard features. It doesn’t have air conditioning, a stereo or electronic stability control, though it does have power windows and door locks and anti-lock brakes. Well-equipped models come with these features, as well as Bluetooth and navigation.

Sedan, hatchback and crossover models have good cargo space. However, like most small cars, the SX4’s rear seats may be tight for some because there isn’t enough legroom. Still, some car reviewers thought there was good leg- and foot space, and a number of critics commented that the front seats of the SX4 were roomy and comfortable despite its small size.

The SX4’s safety ratings are below-average for the class.

Other Cars to Consider

Both the 2009 Subaru Impreza sedan and hatchback have standard all-wheel drive and electronic stability control, which aren’t available on the base SX4. Test drivers said performance from the base Impreza was more than adequate for small-car shoppers, but they highly recommend the WRX, which has a turbocharged engine. The Impreza also has great safety ratings.

The 2009 Toyota Corolla ranks highly in the class thanks to great safety ratings that the SX4 can’t match. If you’re drawn to the SX4 because of its available all-wheel drive or hatchback versatility, the Corolla may not meet your needs. However, the Corolla offers significantly better fuel economy, and it impressed test drivers with its high-quality cabin when it was new.
