Maximum Cargo Space: 83.9 cu. ft. | $31,450 | U.S. News Score: 8.3/10
With all seats up, the 2019 Honda Pilot can carry as many as eight people. Fold the middle and back row of seats forward, though, and it can haul up to 83.9 cubic feet of cargo. It also has small storage areas throughout the cabin to secure loose items.
With the middle row up, it can still carry a respectable 46.8 cubic feet of stuff.
For 2019, all Pilots now come with the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
21) 2019 Honda Pilot
It’s easy to access the Pilot’s cargo area, which has a lower floor than many three-row rivals. EX-L and above trim levels include a power liftgate, while top trims add a hands-free power liftgate function that just requires you to be near the rear hatch for it to automatically open.
In our ranking of midsize SUVs, the 2019 Honda Pilot holds a spot in the top half of the list. It was a finalist for our 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for Families award.
20) 2019 Dodge Durango
Maximum Cargo Space: 85.1 cu. ft. | $30,195 | U.S. News Score: 8.0/10
The 2019 Dodge Durango is another midsize SUV with excellent cargo hauling capability. With all rows folded it can carry up to 85.1 cubic feet of whatever you need to haul. If you have even more stuff, the Durango’s 8,700-pound towing capacity is one of the best in class.
Though Dodge has made various updates through the years, the Durango is one of the older designs in the segment. It holds a position about two-thirds of the way down our ranking of midsize SUVs. In 2018, Dodge added Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support to the Durango’s excellent UConnect infotainment system.
20) 2019 Dodge Durango
With the second row of seats in place, the 2019 Dodge Durango can haul as much as 43.3 cubic feet of cargo. Its wide and deep cargo area is easy to access through a hatch that’s powered on upper trim models.
Unlike most SUVs in the class, the Durango has a front passenger seat that folds flat so the SUV can accommodate large cargo. Engine options range from a standard V6 that provides more power than the engines in most competitors to a potent 475-horsepower V8 in the Durango SRT.
19) 2019 Volvo XC90
Maximum Cargo Space: 85.7 cu. ft. | $47,700 | U.S. News Score: 8.0/10
The 2019 Volvo XC90 is the brand’s largest SUV. With both rows of seats folded, it can carry as much as 85.7 cubic feet of cargo. With all of the seats up, the 2019 XC90 now seats up to seven people. Previous years’ models only had seating for five standard.
When compared to most rivals in our ranking of luxury midsize SUVs, the XC90 has more cargo room. With the second row of seats used for passengers, there’s still 41.8 cubic feet of space available for cargo. Even with all seats in use, the XC90 offers 15.8 cubic feet of space, which is above average for the class.
19) 2019 Volvo XC90
Volvo makes loading cargo into the XC90 a breeze with a standard hands-free tailgate that’s opened with a wave of your foot under the rear bumper. Opt for the available air suspension and you can lower the height of the cargo floor for easy loading.
In our ranking of luxury midsize SUVs, the 2019 Volvo XC90 earns a spot about three-quarters of the way down the list. While the XC90 has a lot going for it, including a wealth of standard and available safety technology, its low predicted reliability rating and overly firm ride lower its overall performance in our rankings.
18) 2019 Subaru Ascent
Maximum Cargo Space: 86.5 cu. ft. | $31,995 | U.S. News Score: 8.5/10
Subaru introduced their all-new three-row Ascent SUV for 2019, giving buyers a larger alternative to the brand’s popular Outback and Forester crossovers. The 2019 Subaru Ascent can carry up to eight people or 86.5 cubic feet of cargo with second- and third-row its seats folded.
Despite only coming with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the Ascent can still tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, which is a good towing rating for the midsize SUV class. All Ascent models come standard with Eyesight, Subaru’s suite of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies.
18) 2019 Subaru Ascent
With the rear seats folded forward, the 2019 Subaru Ascent holds up to 47.5 cubic feet of cargo, though cargo capacities for Ascent models with sunroofs are slightly lower than those without a sunroof. Even with all three rows of seats in place, there’s still above average cargo space available.
Upper trim models feature a power liftgate with a height adjustment for garages with low ceilings, while wide back doors make it easy to load bulky items into the cargo area from the sides of the vehicle.
In our ranking of midsize SUVs, the new Ascent holds a spot in the top quarter of the list.
17) 2019 Tesla Model X
Maximum Cargo Space: 88.1 cu. ft. | $82,000 | U.S. News Score: 8.1/10
Not only can the 2019 Tesla Model X carry a good deal of cargo, it can also get that cargo to its destination quickly without burning a drop of gas. The Model X is one of few battery-electric SUVs available, and it has the largest cargo capacity of any EV currently available.
Between its rear cargo area and its front trunk, or frunk, the Model X can carry up to 88.1 cubic feet of cargo with its second- and available third-row of seats folded. If you opt for second-row captain's chairs, however, your maximum cargo room is significantly reduced. The captain's chairs don't fold, making it difficult to carry large items.
Unlike most SUVs, the falcon doors on the Model X don’t allow for the installation of a roof rack to carry additional cargo. There is, however, extra cargo space under the crossover's floor.
17) 2019 Tesla Model X
Depending on the model you choose, the 2019 Tesla Model X has a range of between 238 and 295 miles. It can be charged at a variety of home and public charging stations, including the proprietary Tesla Supercharger network.
The range you get will vary based on road and driving conditions, plus the load you’re carrying. Its electric motors can launch the crossover from zero to 60 mph in as little as 2.8 seconds, though you’ll pay a hefty price to enable the maximum performance.
In our ranking of luxury midsize SUVs, the Model X holds a spot about three-quarters of the way down the list. Despite its impressive performance and cargo carrying ability, its ranking is held down by fit, finish, and interior quality issues that are not acceptable at a luxury price point.
16) 2019 Land Rover Discovery
Maximum Cargo Space: 88.3 cu. ft. | $52,600 | U.S. News Score: 8.3/10
Not only does the 2019 Land Rover Discovery have one of the largest cargo capacities in the luxury midsize SUV class, but it also offers innovative ways to access the cargo room. You can gesture with your foot to open the rear hatch and use your smartphone to lower the rear seats.
Land Rover's intelligent seat fold is part of the brand's InControl smartphone connectivity app. Using the app, owners can prepare the car for the cargo or passengers they plan to carry, by folding or raising the second- or third-row seats. The system includes sensors so you won't crush items that are already on the seats or in the cargo area.
16) 2019 Land Rover Discovery
The 2019 Land Rover Discovery holds a midpack spot in our ranking of luxury midsize SUVs. It's an excellent choice if you like to camp well off the beaten trail. Between its great cargo carrying capacity and exceptional off-road capabilities, it can carry everything you need for an extended adventure.
When equipped with its available diesel engine, the Discovery has excellent fuel economy and range. Four-wheel drive comes standard on all trim levels. With all of its seats up, the Discovery is capable of carrying seven people.
15) 2019 Toyota 4Runner
Maximum Cargo Space: 89.7 cu. ft. | $35,110 | U.S. News Score: 7.6/10
It has been the better part of a decade since the venerable 4Runner has been redesigned. Still, the 2019 Toyota 4Runner still has a lot going for it if you’re looking for an SUV that can carry a large amount of cargo and traverse rugged off-road obstacles and challenging weather.
The 4Runner is available with either two or three rows of seating. Opting for the two-row (five-passenger) model and folding the rear seats down opens up 89.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is excellent for the class. If you choose a three-row configuration and use the back seat for passengers, you’ll find little room for cargo left.
15) 2019 Toyota 4Runner
The 2019 Toyota 4Runner’s squared-off shape and large rear hatch make it easy to load bulky items, though its higher-than-average load floor makes it a bit challenging to load heavy suitcases or other items. The SUV’s no-frills cabin won’t leave you afraid to get it dirty during off-road adventures.
In our ranking of midsize SUVs, the 4Runner holds a spot near the bottom of the list. It simply doesn't have the on-road refinement of most class rivals and its fuel economy is rather dismal. None of that matters, however, if you're looking for a reliable vehicle with exceptional off-road prowess and great cargo hauling ability.
Unlike most Toyota models, including the similarly sized 2019 Toyota Highlander, the 4Runner is not available with the Toyota Safety Sense package of advanced driver assistance and safety technology.
14) 2019 BMW X7
Maximum Cargo Space: 90.4 cu. ft. | $73,900 | U.S. News Score: 8.4/10
The all-new 2019 BMW X7 features a boxy profile that fits 90.4 cubic feet of cargo behind its front seats. With the second-row in place, the cargo capacity is 48.6 cubic feet. With all three rows of seats up there is little space between the rear seat and the tailgate.
In our ranking of luxury large SUVs, the X7 earns a spot just below the segment leaders. It has the opulent interior you would expect in a luxury flagship SUV, excellent fuel economy for its size, and a powerful pair of turbocharged engine options. With the proper equipment, the X7 can tow up to 7,500 pounds. All X7 models are equipped with all-wheel drive.
14) 2019 BMW X7
The new 2019 BMW X7 has a host of features that make cargo loading and carrying effortless. Both the second and third row of seats can be raised and lowered from the rear of the SUV. The second-row can also be moved fore-and-aft from the back.
A power-opening and closing split tailgate is included on all X7 models, as is air suspension, which allows a user at the rear of the SUV to lower the vehicle’s floor for easier cargo loading.
13) 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS
Maximum Cargo Space: 93.8 cu. ft. | $70,150 | U.S. News Score: 8.6/10
With all of its seats in the up position, the luxurious 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS can seat up to seven. Lower both the second and third row and it can swallow as much as 93.8 cubic feet of cargo. With the second row in place, the GLS holds 49.4 cubic feet of cargo.
The GLS has one of the most spacious third-row seats in the market. The price of that third-row comfort is cargo room behind the upright seat, which is a low-for-the-class 16 cubic feet.
With engines ranging from 362 to 577 horsepower, that cargo is sure to reach its destination on time. All GLS models come with all-wheel drive and either a seven- or nine-speed automatic transmission. The high-performance AMG GLS 63 is one of the most powerful SUVs you can buy, with the ability to launch from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
13) 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS includes several features to make cargo hauling easy. Every GLS comes standard with a power liftgate and power-folding third-row seats. The middle row is split 60/40 for cargo-carrying flexibility. All GLS models also include air suspension, which compensates for heavy loads by leveling the SUV.
In our ranking of luxury large SUVs, the GLS holds a spot near the top of the list. Its ample power, confident handling, and opulent cabin set it above many rivals. It comes standard with automatic emergency braking and a driver drowsiness monitor. As with many luxury vehicles, the base price of the GLS is merely a starting point, with tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of optional equipment available.
12) 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
Maximum Cargo Space: 94.7 cu. ft. | $48,000 | U.S. News Score: 8.4/10
The first of several large body-on-frame large SUVs from General Motors to make this list is the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe. It can carry up to nine people with its seats up, or as much as 94.7 cubic feet of cargo with them folded forward.
Even with the second row of seats in place, the Tahoe can carry up 51.7 cubic feet of stuff.
In our ranking of large SUVs, the Tahoe scores a spot near the top of the list. It’s powered by strong V8 engines, has a predicted reliability rating that's well above average, and comes with more standard infotainment features than many rivals. Every Tahoe comes standard with an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system that supports an onboard Wi-Fi hot spot, a 4G LTE data connection, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.
12) 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
While its construction as a truck-based SUV gives the Tahoe excellent towing and off-road driving capabilities, it comes at the price of ease of cargo loading. The Tahoe’s load floor is higher than those you’ll find in many car-like crossover SUVs. Hands-free and power liftgates are available on upper trims.
The 2019 Chevy Tahoe was a finalist for our 2019 Best Large SUV for Families award. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 8,600 pounds, which is enough for many camping trailers and boats.
Every Tahoe comes standard with Chevy’s Teen Driver System. It allows parents to set limits on various vehicle systems and get a report card back on their teen’s time behind the wheel.
11) 2019 Infiniti QX80
Maximum Cargo Space: 95.1 cu. ft. | $65,400 | U.S. News Score: 7.7/10
With a cargo area that holds 95.1 cubic feet of gear with its second and third row of seats stowed, the 2019 Infiniti QX80 is an above-average hauler in the luxury large SUV segment. With the second row of seats up, it can carry nearly 50 cubic feet of cargo.
Next to many class rivals, the QX80’s starting price is a bargain, though it lacks features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that are common in the class. For 2019, Infiniti installs automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection in every QX80 model. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, with all-wheel drive available.
11) 2019 Infiniti QX80
The 2019 Infiniti QX80 comes standard with a power liftgate. An available video rearview mirror shows what’s happening behind the SUV when a traditional rearview mirror would be blocked by rear seat passengers or cargo. Power-folding 60/40-split third-row seats come standard.
A surround-view camera system with moving object detection alerts drivers to people or pets that may be moving into the path of the vehicle.
The QX80 holds a spot near the bottom of our ranking of luxury large SUVs. Despite its cargo-hauling prowess and strong engine power, it's merely a good vehicle in a class that's full of excellent SUVs.
10) 2019 Nissan Armada
Maximum Cargo Space: 95.4 cu. ft. | $47,100 | U.S. News Score: 7.9/10
Fold the second and third rows in the 2019 Nissan Armada, and you’ll have 95.4 cubic feet of space to carry cargo. With the middle row up, it has about 50 cubic feet of cargo room. With all of the seats in place, there’s 16.5 cubic feet left for cargo.
In our ranking of large SUVs, the Armada holds a spot in the lower half of the list. While it has plenty of power, the ability to tow up to 8,500 pounds when properly equipped, and composed handling for such a massive vehicle, its mileage is below average and its infotainment system feels antiquated compared to most rivals. For 2019, Nissan has added automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and rear door alert to the SUVs standard feature list. The rear door alert reminds drivers to check the back seat, so they don't forget people, pets, or cargo as they walk away from the car.
10) 2019 Nissan Armada
Like many large SUVs, the 2019 Nissan Armada has a high load floor, making the loading of heavy items more difficult than it is in other vehicles. Unlike some rivals, the Armada’s seats fold completely flat, so loading longer cargo is easier. A power liftgate and power folding third-row are available.
The Armada comes standard with seating for eight, with four sets of LATCH hardware available for the easy installation of child seats.
9) 2019 Volkswagen Atlas
Maximum Cargo Space: 96.8 cu. ft. | $30,895 | U.S. News Score: 8.3/10
The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas is the largest vehicle the company sells in the United States. With its second and third rows of seats folded flat, the midsize Atlas can hold up to 96.8 cubic feet of cargo. That's an excellent cargo capacity for class.
Volkswagen offers two engine choices for the Atlas. If you’re planning to maximize the SUV’s cargo hauling capability, it’s a good idea to opt for the 276-horsepower V6 rather than the standard turbocharged four-cylinder. All Atlas models use an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, while all-wheel drive is an option.
9) 2019 Volkswagen Atlas
With its seats folded, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas has a wide and flat load floor with handy recessed alcoves for smaller items. A hands-free power liftgate is available on upper trim models. Even with all seven seats in use, the Atlas has a respectable 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space available.
The Atlas earns a position in the upper half of our ranking of midsize SUVs. It was a finalist for our 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for the Money award. Standard features for 2019 include automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and post-collision braking.
8) 2019 Buick Enclave
Maximum Cargo Space: 97.6 cu. ft. | $40,000 | U.S. News Score: 8.2/10
The 2019 Buick Enclave is a quiet, smooth riding midsize SUV with the ability to convert from comfortably hauling seven people to carrying as much as 97.6 cubic feet of cargo. With all seats in use, the Enclave still has a generous 23.6 cubic foot cargo capacity.
In U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of midsize SUVs, the Enclave earns a spot about halfway down the list. It was a finalist for our 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for Families award. The Enclave’s available feature list includes a 360-degree camera system and a high-tech rearview camera in place of a traditional rearview mirror. Both help you see what’s happening around the vehicle when there’s a full load of cargo blocking your views.
8) 2019 Buick Enclave
The 2019 Buick Enclave’s car-like construction provides a lower cargo floor than on many truck-based SUVs with similar cargo-carrying capacities. A standard hands-free rear liftgate and optional power-folding third-row seats make cargo loading simple. With just the third-row folded, there’s 58 cubic feet of space available behind the second-row seat.
Unlike some SUVs in the midsize class, the Enclave has standard roof rails that can accommodate a roof rack for even more cargo-carrying capacity.
Every Enclave comes standard with a robust infotainment system that includes an 8-inch touch screen, plus support for a 4G LTE data connection, an onboard Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
7) 2019 Chevrolet Traverse
Maximum Cargo Space: 98.2 cu. ft. | $29,930 | U.S. News Score: 8.2/10
The 2019 Chevrolet Traverse is our 2019 Best 3-Row SUV for Families award winner. Not only is it a roomy and capable family hauler, but it can also be quickly converted into a spacious cargo-hauler, with 98.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second- and third-row seats folded.
In our ranking of midsize SUVs, the Traverse holds a spot about halfway down the list. It has a predicted reliability rating that’s a bit above average, a comfortable ride, and an array of standard infotainment technology that includes an 7-inch touch screen and support for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an onboard Wi-Fi hot spot, and a 4G LTE data connection.
7) 2019 Chevrolet Traverse
Though the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse crossover competes in the midsize SUV arena, its cargo capacity is more like a full-size, truck-based SUV. Its 98.2 cubic feet of cargo space is the roomiest you’ll find in the midsize SUV segment.
With the second row up, there’s still a generous 57.8 cubic feet of cargo space available. With all three rows of seats being used for passengers, there’s 23 cubic feet of cargo room. That’s enough for a trip to the warehouse club. The Chevy Traverse also has several small cargo cubbies throughout the cabin to keep small items from getting lost.
Available features include a power liftgate, a hands-free power liftgate, and a power folding third-row.
6) 2019 Toyota Sequoia
Maximum Cargo Space: 120.1 cu. ft. | $48,850 | U.S. News Score: 8.0/10
Though the 2019 Toyota Sequoia has one of the oldest designs in its segment, it’s still one of the most capable cargo-hauling SUVs you can buy. With its second- and third-row seats folded, it can fit up to 120.1 cubic feet of cargo.
The Sequoia comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense package of advanced driver assistance and safety features, including automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning.
6) 2019 Toyota Sequoia
When all three rows of the Sequoia’s seats are in use, the large SUV can carry 18.9 cubic feet of cargo. Fold the third row either manually or with the available power folding seat option, and it can carry 66.6 cubic feet of cargo. A power liftgate is available.
In our ranking of large SUVs, the Sequoia earns a spot in the middle of the pack. In addition to being a capable cargo hauler, it can carry up to eight in its spacious interior. The Sequoia’s ranking is held back by poor fuel economy and an infotainment system that has not kept pace with rivals.
5) 2019 Lincoln Navigator L
Maximum Cargo Space: 120.2 cu. ft. | $80,755 | U.S. News Score: 9.0/10
Lincoln offers the opulent Navigator luxury SUV in two lengths. While the standard length model is a capable hauler with 103.3 cubic feet of space available with the second- and third-row seats folded, it’s the long-wheelbase 2019 Lincoln Navigator L that’s the model’s cargo volume leader.
The Navigator L can hold up to 120.2 cubic feet of cargo with the middle and rear seats stowed. With the second row in use, there’s 73.3 cubic feet for your stuff. Even with all rows up, the Navigator still has 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space. Standard wheelbase models offer 57.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 19.3 cubic feet of storage behind the third row.
5) 2019 Lincoln Navigator L
Lincoln makes it easy to configure the Navigator’s cargo area with second- and third-row power folding seats. A hands-free power liftgate included on all models. The fixed-in-place second-row center console on some models and a high load floor can make the big Lincoln harder to load than rivals.
The 2019 Lincoln Navigator earns the top spot in our ranking of luxury large SUVs. It’s powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 that produces 450 horsepower that can easily move the Navigator – even when fully loaded with people or cargo. Properly equipped, the Navigator can tow up to 8,700 pounds.
4) 2019 Cadillac Escalade ESV
Maximum Cargo Space: 120.9 cu. ft. | $78,195 | U.S. News Score: 7.7/10
Cadillac offers the luxurious Escalade in two lengths, with the extended-wheelbase Escalade ESV being the family's cargo-hauling champion. With its middle and back row folded flat, it can carry up to 120.9 cubic feet of cargo. With the second row in use, there's 76.7 cubic feet of storage.
If you are using all three rows to carry as many as seven passengers, there’s still an ample 39.3 cubic feet of room behind the third row for several pieces of luggage.
The 2019 Cadillac Escalade is one of the oldest models in our ranking of luxury large SUVs, and its age is reflected in its place near the bottom of the list. Despite having excellent engine power and a luxurious interior, an unrefined infotainment system and lack of standard advanced safety technology features leave it trailing newer rivals.
4) 2019 Cadillac Escalade ESV
The 2019 Cadillac Escalade comes standard with power-folding third-row seats, available second-row power-folding seats, and an available hands-free power tailgate. Because it is based on a truck platform, the Escalade’s load floor is higher than you’ll find in car-based crossovers.
Buyers who opt for the standard-wheelbase Escalade will find 15.2 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 51.6 cubic feet when the third row is folded flat, and 94.2 cubic feet of storage when the middle and back rows are folded flat. It is priced $3,000 lower than the long-wheelbase model.
3) 2019 Ford Expedition Max
Maximum Cargo Space: 121.5 cu. ft. | $54,815 | U.S. News Score: 9.0/10
Like many large SUVs, Ford offers the 2019 Expedition in standard and extended wheelbase models. The extended version, called the 2019 Ford Expedition Max, is one of the roomiest SUVs you can buy. It has a maximum cargo capacity of 121.5 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.
In our ranking of large SUVs, the 2019 Expedition holds a top spot. It was also named our 2019 Best Large SUV for Families award winner. It has an above average predicted reliability rating, a strong turbocharged V6 engine, and an excellent towing capacity of 9,300 pounds when properly equipped.
3) 2019 Ford Expedition Max
Depending on the interior configuration chosen, the 2019 Ford Expedition Max either seats seven or eight in three rows. It has its top cargo-carrying capacity with the middle and back row folded, though it still offers a cavernous 79.6 cubic feet of storage space with just the third row folded.
When all three rows of seats are in use, there’s 36 cubic feet available for luggage, pets, or other cargo behind the third row. Ford offers a hands-free liftgate, as well as second- and third-row power folding seats.
The standard-wheelbase Ford Expedition has 104.6 cubic feet of space with all of the seats folded, 63.6 with the second row up, and 20.9 cubic feet with all seats in their upright position.
1) 2019 GMC Yukon XL (Tie)
Maximum Cargo Space: 121.7 cu. ft. | $52,300 | U.S. News Score: 7.6/10
All of the top contenders on this list are within two cubic feet of one another. GMC’s entrant in the battle is the long-wheelbase model of the 2019 GMC Yukon. The Yukon XL has a chart-topping cargo capacity of 121.7 cubic feet with its seats folded.
With just the third row folded, there’s 76.7 cubic feet available for cargo. When using the third row, there’s still an ample 39.3 cubic feet of cargo room. Those dimensions closely mirror the Yukon’s corporate cousins – the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban and 2019 Cadillac Escalade.
1) 2019 GMC Yukon XL (Tie)
GMC offers a hands-free power tailgate on upper trim models of the Yukon XL as well as power folding second- and third-row seats. Similar options are available on the standard-wheelbase GMC Yukon.
When used as a people-hauler, the 2019 GMC Yukon is one of the few SUVs that can carry as many as nine people. Both the standard and long-wheelbase models are available in mainstream Yukon and luxurious Yukon Denali trim levels with V8 engine options ranging from 355 to 420 horsepower.
In our ranking of large SUVs, the aging Yukon holds a spot at the bottom of the list. In many ways, that's an indication of the strength of the class and not any specific weakness of the Yukon.
1) 2019 Chevrolet Suburban (Tie)
Maximum Cargo Space: 121.7 cu. ft. | $50,800 | U.S. News Score: 8.2/10
Tied with the 2019 GMC Yukon XL for the cargo hauling crown is the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban. Like its GMC sibling, the Suburban can carry up to 121.7 cubic feet of cargo with its second and third row of seats folded flat.
Chevy first produced a vehicle with the Suburban nameplate in 1935, and the vehicle is now an iconic people and cargo hauler. Depending on the configuration, it can seat up to eight. Though it’s due for a redesign in the next year or so, the current model holds firm on a midpack spot in our ranking of large SUVs.
1) 2019 Chevrolet Suburban (Tie)
There’s a reason that many mountain resorts use Chevrolet Suburbans to shuttle their guests from place to place. Not only is its cargo area cavernous, but the truck-based Suburban is available with four-wheel drive, giving the truck-based SUV excellent inclement weather prowess.
With all three rows of seats occupied, you can still fit 39.3 cubic feet of cargo in the 2019 Chevrolet Suburban. Fold the third-row flat, and there's 76.7 cubic feet of space available. Chevy offers a hands-free liftgate plus power-folding second- and third-row seats.
Several optional appearance packages are available to customize your Suburban right from the factory. For 2019, you can get RST, Signature, Z71 Off-road, and Midnight packages.
SUV Alternatives: Minivans
Buyers who need massive amounts of cargo volume, but don’t want the ponderous size, price, and fuel-guzzling that comes with large SUVs have an alternative. Every new minivan sold today easily eclipses the cargo capacity of the largest SUV. The 2019 Honda Odyssey can fit 158 cubic feet of cargo.
Minivans are also easier to load, with wide and low cargo floors, massive rear hatches, and sliding side doors that allow cargo to be loaded from the sides of the vehicles. Compared to truck-based SUVs, minivans are more manageable to drive and fit better in urban areas where there's less space to maneuver.
The 2019 Chrysler Pacifica features Stow ‘n Go seating, which folds neatly into the floor, allowing the van to switch from people to cargo hauling in a matter of seconds. The 2019 Toyota Sienna offers available all-wheel drive, providing all-weather confidence. Compared to SUVs, most minivans drive like cars, rather than trucks.
