8 SUVs That Need an Update

2 of 9

Jeep Patriot

The Jeep Patriot – along with its twin, the Jeep Compass – were not competitive SUVs when released in 2007. Ten years later, it’s no better. As a result, the Jeep Patriot earned a Poor rating in the latest difficult small-offset crash test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Beyond that, the Patriot is slow, noisy, and cramped inside. The whole interior is covered in hard plastics that you might find in an ice cooler. Even with its small engine and continuously variable transmission, gas mileage is a mediocre 24 mpg in combined city/highway EPA testing. Only a few specially equipped Patriots get Jeep’s Trail Rated badge, which indicated they are suited to be driven off road. Jeep has repeatedly promised a replacement for the Patriot, but we’re still waiting.
