Here Are the Crossovers and SUVs With the Best MPG

The increasing popularity of crossovers and SUVs should surprise absolutely no one. They’re comfortable to drive, great for passenger and cargo space, and most offer the extra stability of four- or all-wheel drive.

Heavy, truck-based, traditional SUVs forced buyers to choose between capability and efficiency, but those days are long behind us. You can get similar space and comfort from a wide variety of vehicles without the need for constant fill-ups.

To determine the most fuel-efficient SUVs of 2019, we used the EPA’s annual fuel cost calculations, which are based on a vehicle’s fuel economy, as well as fuel type. In other words, the EPA’s formula accounts for vehicles that require more-expensive diesel or premium fuel.

Although this list is based on the EPA’s annual fuel cost estimate, from least to most efficient, we’ll include plenty of other pertinent information that will help you decide which of these vehicles are most worthy of your attention, like pricing and U.S. News overall scores. (Keep in mind that U.S. News scores are updated constantly as new data comes in, so the scores mentioned in this article may not match those in our rankings and reviews.)

If you plan to buy a new crossover or SUV in the coming year, the following slides are a primer on the most fuel-efficient options.
