Buying Advice

Last Updated: October 11, 2019

Class-Leading Sales: The Subaru Outback is the best-selling wagon on the market in 2019, although sales have remained constant this year relative to the same period last year. Competing crossover SUVs, however, such as the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue, are outselling the Outback by at least 93 percent.

Low Prices: The Outback starts at $26,645, which is about $7,900 below the average for the segment. The fully-loaded model tops out at $39,695, which is just under $3,000 below the class average. Some compact SUVs, like the Chevy Equinox and Hyundai Tucson, cost less than the Outback, though all-wheel drive is not standard like it is on the Subaru. On the other hand, the Outback costs at least $12,000 less than some wagon models from luxury brands, such as the Audi Allroad and the redesigned Volvo V60.

Time to Buy: The Outback is a popular and well-rounded wagon, so you’ll get your money’s worth if you buy one now. Plus, with the redesigned 2020 Outback now on sale, dealers may be willing to settle on a lower price to clear out 2019 inventory. For more savings, consider a compact SUV like the Ford Escape, which starts about $2,500 below the Outback. This month’s Subaru deals and Ford deals can help you make a decision.
