2011 Subaru Outback Review

The 2011 Subaru Outback excels where other wagons fall short, thanks to balanced handling, ample cargo space and a capable all-wheel drive system.

Pros & Cons

  • Balanced handling
  • Standard all-wheel drive
  • Large cargo hold
  • Low fuel economy for the class

2011 Subaru Outback Overview

The 2011 Subaru Outback has a base four-cylinder engine that gets 19/27 mpg city/highway. Many reviewers said the 2011 Outback is powerful enough for most shoppers, and that it has enough pep for merging onto the freeway. Outback models with the four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) get slightly better 22/29 mpg city/highway fuel economy. Reviewers said the available six-cylinder engine brings more power, and that both engines operate smoothly. Test drivers said that the Outback’s standard all-wheel drive and high ground clearance make it more capable if you drive through snow or travel off the beaten path. Auto writers agreed that AWD gives the Outback an edge in poor weather conditions, and that the Outback handles sharp turns better than many wagons and SUVs.

Inside, the Outback should seat everyone comfortably, according to test drivers, who noted spacious front and rear seats and a streamlined interior design. The Outback can hold 34.3 cubic feet of cargo behind its second row and a maximum of 71.3 cubic feet with the back seat folded down, which is large for the class. The base Outback comes standard with an auxiliary jack, luggage rack and 60/40-split fold-down rear seat with a reclining feature. Available features included a moonroof, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, navigation, a six-disc CD changer and Bluetooth phone and audio capabilities. For 2011, satellite radio and a rearview camera were also added to the list of available features.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2011 Toyota Venza is available with a four- or six-cylinder engine, just like the Outback. While it doesn’t come with standard all-wheel drive, the Venza trumps the Outback with a longer list of standard features.

The 2011 Honda Accord Crosstour is a wagon with SUV-like tendencies, just like the Outback. When it was new, reviewers liked the Accord Crosstour’s car-like ride, and it comes with a more powerful engine than the Outback. Unlike most 2011 wagons, the Accord Crosstour is also available with all-wheel drive.
