2016 Subaru Legacy Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2016 Subaru Legacy was new.

Scorecard

Interior: 8.1

Auto journalists note that the 2016 Subaru Legacy's cabin features a clean, simple design and is made with top-notch materials. Most reviewers say seating is supportive and spacious, though a few remark the front seats are a bit stiff and rear-seat headroom is scarce for tall passengers. Critics praise the Legacy's infotainment system, saying it is responsive and easy to use. Cargo space is typical for the class.

  • "High-quality materials adorn the Legacy's cabin, while passengers both front and rear enjoy stretch-out space." -- Left Lane News
  • "Subaru's no-nonsense approach to car design is reflected in the simple and straightforward interior design of the 2016 Subaru Legacy." -- Edmunds
  • "All pieces the driver interacts with feel good, especially the leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel that has just-right bulges in the neighborhood of 10 and 2. A step up the pricing ladder from Premium to Limited trim brings with it leather upholstery in place of cloth, and low-gloss fake wood trim that looks a grade or two better than we'd expect at its price point." -- Autoblog (2015)
  • "We were equally impressed with the Legacy's newfound sense of midsize-sedan refinement, as evidenced by a generous helping of soft-touch materials and, at long last, a wholly revamped infotainment platform." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Seating

The 2016 Subaru Legacy seats five, and available features include 10-way power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, heated rear seats and leather upholstery. Most auto writers report that the Legacy has spacious, comfortable seating in both rows, and they say that finding a suitable driving position is easy. A few note that the seats can feel stiff over the course of a long drive, and that rear-seat headroom is lacking for taller occupants. Outward visibility is excellent in the Legacy, according to critics.

  • "Still, the driver's seat is a great place to be largely because it's so comfortable, a fact that also applies to the Legacy's back seats and passenger seat (all of which are roomy for a midsize sedan). Visibility is also excellent to all directions, much like many of the Legacy's rivals." -- AutoTrader
  • "One thing we like about the Legacy is its excellent outward visibility -- no small feat in an age of high door lines and bulky pillars that result from modern safety standards. Firm, supportive seats and a slightly higher driving position make the Legacy Subaru's most comfortable sedan yet." -- Edmunds
  • In terms of comfort, the back seats provided ample legroom and headroom for most body types, but those living in warm climates will rue the lack of standard rear air vents. Up front, the seating situation elicited polarizing responses, with some of us preferring the firm padding and ever-present lumbar support while others complained of back pain within the first 45 minutes of driving." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)
  • The Legacy's front buckets provide plenty of comfort and support and, unlike most sedans in this segment, offer bolsters that are capable of keeping you firmly planted in your seat during spirited driving. Rear seat room is good, but that aforementioned ‘coupe-like’ roofline does impede on headroom for passengers over six-feet." -- Left Lane News (2015)

Interior Features

The 2016 Subaru Legacy comes standard with Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, a rearview camera, a 6.2-inch touch-screen infotainment system, smartphone app integration and a four-speaker audio system. Available features include a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation, a moonroof, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and a voice-activated infotainment system with a 7-inch touch-screen display, which responds to scrolling and swiping multi-touch gestures, similar to an iPad. Also available is Subaru's EyeSight system, which provides lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and pre-collision braking at speeds less than 30 mph.

Test drivers praise the 2016 Legacy's infotainment system, saying it has a clear display and user-friendly menus and controls. They also like the responsive, iPad-like functionality of the touch screen, as well as the easy-to-use navigation system. Critics add that the physical audio buttons and knobs are handy.

  • "The optional touchscreen navigation system has crisp graphics and is pretty easy to use thanks to smartphone-like operation and large icons." -- Edmunds
  • "The optional seven-inch touchscreen in our Limited model looks and functions much better than those in older Subarus. The screen responds crisply to inputs and lets you pinch and zoom like an Apple iPad." -- Automobile Magazine (2015)
  • "Particularly impressive is the clean, logical layout of the navigation and infotainment system. A far cry from the ridiculously fussy touch-screen setup in our long-term Subaru BRZ, the major functions (map, radio, satellite, climate) are on the outer frame of the screen, thoughtfully minimizing the number of screen taps needed to complete any function. Genuine volume and tuning knobs are welcome here, as are the redundant wheel-mounted controls." -- Car and Driver (2015)
  • "The optional navigation system in our test car represented a monumental improvement over the previous interface in both usability and feature content thanks to its user-friendly home screen, large icons, smartphone integration, and high-resolution display." -- Kelley Blue Book (2015)

Cargo

The 2016 Subaru Legacy has 15 cubic feet of trunk space, which is typical for the class, and it comes standard with split-folding rear seats. Reviewers say the trunk is large and has a wide opening for simple luggage loading.

  • "Cargo capacity is also a Legacy strong [suit], with a sizable 15 cubic feet of stowage space available in the trunk." -- Left Lane News
  • "Cargo room is up slightly to 15 cubic feet, and the wide opening makes it easy to take advantage of the available space." -- Edmunds (2015)
