2011 Subaru Legacy Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2011 Subaru Legacy was new.

Interior: 7.9

The passenger cabin of the 2011 Legacy is as divisive as its exterior. Reviewers consistently praise the spacious layout and comfortable seats. They disagree on the quality of materials - some find the Legacy nearly upscale, while others complain of cheap materials in spots.

  • “The cockpit is comfortable but not particularly stylish or modern. There are few quality complaints too, like the uneven, gaping fits where the steering wheel hub meets the two horizontal spokes." – Automobile Magazine
  • "Cabin decor is par for the midsize-car course, with lots of hard plastic and few soft surfaces. Still, the base Legacy interior doesn't look cheap, and the faux-metal trim adds a touch of class. The Limited models add leather upholstery for a more up-market look." – Consumer Guide

If reviewers are unanimous about any aspect of the 2011 Legacy, it's the seats. The front seats are wide and supportive. They lack much side bolstering for aggressive driving maneuvers, but are supremely comfortable on long road trips. The rear seats, meanwhile, are among the most spacious available in this price range. Buyers who regularly have to transport adults in the back seat might want to give the Legacy close consideration.

Car seat installation is an easy and quick task, thanks to well-placed LATCH connectors and a clever design that makes them easy to access. But the Legacy, realistically, will fit only two car seats -- even though its rear seats are wider than most midsize cars, they aren't wide enough to accommodate three.

  • "The seats are comfortable and the Legacy's provide plenty of headroom and rear seat legroom." -- Edmunds
  • "This model's back seat is markedly more spacious than the previous-generation Legacy and indeed many of its midsize rivals. Knee and foot space are ample, and legroom is better than adequate for 6-footers. A tall-for-the-class build eases entry and exit." – Consumer Guide

Interior Features

Reviewers have little to say about the Legacy's suite of in-cabin technology. The navigation, climate and entertainment systems are neither disappointing nor impressive. Some complain of cheap switchgear, while others like the control layout.

  • "The center stack, looking a bit like a giant high-tech welding mask, has a nice simulated brushed aluminum finish and rows of control buttons that are simple, yet classy in their presentation." -- Road and Track
  • “The main gauge cluster is easy to read, but not so the too-small central dash-top readout for outside temperature, clock, and fuel economy. Standard climate system places controls conveniently high and close to the driver. The available navigation system does not complicate controls." -- Consumer Guide
  • "You should also note that sound quality from the base sound system is poor and we highly recommend the available Harman Kardon upgrade system." -- Edmunds

The Legacy offers 14.7 cubic feet of trunk space - an average size for the midsize car class. Reviewers say, however, that its huge opening and low load floor make it easy to use the full trunk space, and storage within the cabin is abundant.

  • "The trunk is surprisingly long, and despite some wheel-well intrusion, decently wide. Useful under-floor storage is an added bonus. Cabin storage consists of large door pockets, several handy open bins, and a bi-level console box." -- Consumer Guide
  • "There's ample room in the glove compartment and center console, and all four doors have sizeable pockets - not something you often find, at least not in rear doors." -- Cars.com
