2020 Subaru Impreza Interior

2020 Subaru Impreza Interior Review

Interior: 7.7

The 2020 Subaru Impreza’s cabin features clean, contemporary styling. Materials vary in quality, with surfaces covered in both low-quality plastics and soft-touch elements. The seats are comfortable and roomy in both rows, and technology is easy to operate. Sedan body styles have below-average trunk space, but the hatchback has about as much overall cargo room as the average compact SUV.

  • "The Impreza's interior may be short on style, but it is tops in its design." -- Car and Driver
  • "Like the Impreza in general, its 5-passenger cabin is practical, inviting and easy to use." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The design is modern, but it hasn't crossed the line into abstract, as is the case in some of the Impreza's rivals. Material quality is very good, despite a few cheap plastic-trim bits scattered here and there." -- Autotrader (2017)

The Subaru Impreza seats five people, and cloth upholstery is standard. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver's seat are optional.

Up front, the seats are comfortable and supportive, even on longer drives. The Impreza is quite spacious for a compact car. Even taller folks have good legroom in the rear, which is rare for the class. Visibility is good in all directions.

For securing child safety seats, the Impreza has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. The rear middle seat has a tether-only connection and the ability to borrow a lower anchor from each side. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system its top rating of Good+ for ease of use.

  • "Rear-seat legroom is impressive for a compact car, and it’s the same whether you opt for the sedan or hatchback." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Its interior space is class competitive, and taller drivers will appreciate the model's ample front-seat legroom." -- Car and Driver
  • "The Impreza's interior shuts out most engine and road noise, and the seats are not only supportive, but they're also incredibly comfortable, even after hours on the road. We do wish Subaru would offer adjustable lumbar support for the driver's seat, however. As for legroom, this 6-foot-plus driver had no issues with the ample legroom, and even with my seat nearly all the way back, rear-seat passengers still had decent knee room and legroom." -- Autotrader

Interior Features

Standard features include the StarLink infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Aha smartphone app integration, a four-speaker stereo, a USB port, and Bluetooth.

Subaru keeps the cabin simple, with a variety of physical buttons and knobs used to control most basic cabin functions, including climate and audio settings. The infotainment system is praised for its responsiveness and large, crisp graphics.

Available features include automatic climate control, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, a moonroof, a six-speaker stereo, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, satellite radio, HD Radio, and an 8-inch touch screen with navigation.

Subaru’s EyeSight suite of safety features comes standard in models with the continously variable automatic transmission. This package includes forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Automatic high-beam headlights, reverse automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane change assist, and rear cross traffic alert are available.

  • "Easy-to-read gauges, simple controls, and an intuitive climate-control system make the Impreza easy to operate." -- Car and Driver
  • "Lower variants have a 6.5-inch touch-screen system, while Sport and Limited editions get a larger, crisp 8-inch screen. We appreciate that, no matter whether you’re adjusting the volume, climate or side mirrors, controls are easy to reach and distinguish." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "With all the new infotainment features offered for '17, it would have been easy for the new car to suffer (as many rivals have) from trying to cram too many functions into multiple layers of a touchscreen. Instead, Subaru went 'old school' by including volume and tuning knobs along with physical buttons for basic functions; others are handled through the touchscreen, but they're far easier than most to decipher and use." -- Consumer Guide (2017)

The Impreza sedan has a 12.3-cubic-foot trunk, which is small for a compact car. However, hatchback models have an above-average 20.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 55.3 cubic feet with them folded. A 60/40-spit-folding rear seat allows you to store longer items.

  • "At 12.3 cubic feet, the sedan offers a reasonable trunk. For the most versatility, opt for the hatchback. It boasts 20.8 cubic feet of storage, and when you fold the rear seats it opens up over 55 cubic feet — nearly that of some small SUVs." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The cargo areas of both the Impreza sedan and hatchback are on the smaller side of the class. Still, both body styles benefit from a standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat that allows for additional cargo storage." -- Car and Driver
  • "Both models have folding rear seat backs that rest a couple inches above the cargo floor when folded, but there's a ramp bridging the gap that should allow long items to be easily slid forward." -- Consumer Guide (2017)
