2014 Subaru Impreza Overview

Is the 2014 Subaru Impreza a Good Used Car?

The Impreza, available as a sedan or hatchback, is a good used car. Its standard all-wheel drive gives it excellent grip – even when inclement weather strikes. The base engine is sluggish when merging onto the highway, so power fiends will want to seek out WRX or WRX STI models for feistier performance. Fuel economy is admirable for the base Impreza. Inside, the Impreza has plenty of room for passengers, and with the hatchback model, there’s ample cargo space for your gear.

Used 2014 Subaru Impreza Performance and Interior

The Impreza comes standard with a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission. Many models come equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a type of automatic. The Impreza has less-than-impressive highway acceleration, but its standard all-wheel drive inspires confidence around turns and provides excellent traction in wet weather. With the base engine and an automatic transmission, the Impreza returns 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, which is excellent for a compact car with all-wheel drive.

The WRX model is fun to drive and offers plenty of oomph from its 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 265 horsepower and 244 pound-feet of torque. But the pinnacle of the Impreza experience comes from the WRX STI, which is outfitted with the same engine but has a higher output of 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. Instead of the WRX’s five-speed manual gearbox, the STI comes with a more enjoyable six-speed manual.

The Impreza sedan and hatchback seat five on standard cloth upholstery. They are available with leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The seats are supportive on long drives and provide ample space in both rows. There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the rear outboard seats and a tether-only connection in the middle seat. The Impreza sedan has a subpar 12-cubic-foot trunk, but the hatchback offers almost double the space behind its rear seats.

Standard features include keyless entry and a four-speaker audio system with a USB port and Bluetooth for audio streaming and phone calls. Available features include a moonroof, cruise control, automatic climate control, navigation, a six-speaker audio system, a touch-screen display, HD Radio, and satellite radio. Climate and infotainment controls are straightforward and easy to reach. Some may find the Impreza’s audio quality less than impressive.

Should I Consider Another Used Impreza?

The 2014 Impreza is part of the car’s fourth generation, which includes the 2012 through 2016 model years. Choosing an older model than the 2014 will get you similar features at a lower cost. For 2013, Bluetooth became standard, and a rearview camera joined the list of available features. The 2014 model saw only a minor shuffling of features and some small safety, security, and infotainment updates.

Which Used Subaru Impreza Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Subaru Impreza has three trim levels: the 2.0i, WRX, and WRX STI. The 2.0i comes in base, Premium, Limited, and two five-door-only trims (Sport Premium and Sport Limited). High-performance trims include the WRX, WRX Premium, WRX Limited, WRX STI, and WRX STI Limited (sedan only).

The 2.0i Sport Limited is a good errand runner for the city dweller. It offers plenty of seating and cargo space and comes standard with a CVT, leather-trimmed seats, automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, a 4.3-inch display, and a rearview camera. Alternatively, the WRX STI Limited boasts plenty of power and even sharper handling – without giving up features. It comes with a 305-horsepower engine, leather upholstery, and a moonroof.

You may want to consider a certified pre-owned vehicle. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Subaru extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. To become certified pre-owned, each vehicle must pass a 152-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Subaru warranty page carefully.

2014 Subaru Impreza and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Subaru Impreza or 2014 Toyota Corolla?

Like the Impreza, the Toyota Corolla makes a great choice for used car shoppers. It touts a lower average price, a higher reliability rating, and more rear-seat legroom and trunk space than the Impreza. However, the Corolla has dull handling, and it doesn’t offer all-wheel drive, high-performance trims, or a larger engine for more power. Either car would be a good choice. The Corolla has better reliability, but the Impreza has a nicer interior.

Which Is Better: 2014 Subaru Impreza or 2014 Mazda Mazda3?

Although the Mazda3 isn’t available with all-wheel drive or a high-performance trim, it has precise handling, a comfortable ride, and good highway passing power with either of its four-cylinder engines. A redesign for 2014 gives the Mazda3 an attractive, high-quality interior with similar seating space to the Impreza. Like the Subaru, the Mazda3 comes in hatchback and sedan forms. At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with either of these compact cars.
