2013 Subaru Impreza Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2013 Subaru Impreza was new.

Interior: 8.3

Reviewers say that the 2013 Subaru Impreza has a conservatively designed cabin that features a mix of hard plastics and soft-touch materials. While some test drivers appreciate the cabin’s reserved look, one critic writes that cars like the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus have more attractive interior designs that feature higher-quality materials.

  • "Impreza's interior looks nice and uses a combination of soft-touch and hard-plastic surfaces. The dash's central control panel has a grained metallic-black finish that adds a bit of visual interest, as does the restrained use of silver-painted trim on the dash and console." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The Impreza's interior design is pretty conservative, a look that might turn off buyers looking for more flair. Others will find it clean, time-tested and high-quality, as the dash and door sills have soft-touch trim and panel gaps are tight." -- Edmunds
  • "Simple and easy-to-use would be the best way of describing the Impreza's interior. Plain may be another." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Subaru has added a smattering of soft-touch materials to the dashboard and doors, and while they're nice, the Cruze's interior still feels more sophisticated and refined (the same goes for the Focus, if we're being honest). Little things like the climate control dials still feel cheap in the Impreza, as does the plastic material on the steering wheel, even on the uplevel leather-laden Limited trim." -- Autoblog (2012)

The 2013 Impreza seats five and stands out with its excellent passenger space and comfortable seats. More than one reviewer says that the front seats offer plenty of room, as well as great outward visibility. Test drivers also note that the back seat is exceptionally spacious, with plenty of room for tall passengers. Cloth seats, a manually-adjustable driver’s seat and a tilt and telescopic steering wheel come standard on the base Impreza, while heated front seats and leather-trimmed seats are available as options or on higher trims.

  • "The airy interior is an Impreza strong point. Even larger folks should feel comfortable up front. Generous fore-aft seat travel will have 6-footers sliding the seat forward a bit." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The front seats are comfortable, the rear seat is one of the roomiest in the segment. ..." -- Edmunds
  • "Shorter drivers will love the low hoodline and generous range of seat-height adjustment. Everyone will appreciate the same from the tilt/telescoping steering wheel. For its class, the Impreza has ample front headroom and legroom." -- Cars.com (2012)
  • "A relatively low beltline means you won't have that sunk-in-the-bathtub feeling that's becoming so popular on new cars these days, and with small changes like having the side mirrors attached to the doors rather than the A-pillars, visibility from the driver's seat is superb." -- Autoblog (2012)

Interior Features

The 2013 Subaru Impreza comes standard with a four-speaker stereo with a USB port, Bluetooth audio streaming and phone connectivity and an auxiliary input jack. A backup camera, automatic climate control, a moonroof, navigation and two premium stereo systems are optional or available on higher trims.

The Impreza earns points from reviewers for its user-friendly climate controls, as well as its easy-to-use navigation option. However, one reviewer was let down by his test car’s stereo system, noting poor sound quality and touch-screen controls that were difficult to use. Another reviewer says that some switchgear, such as the buttons for the heated front seats, are awkwardly placed.

  • "In general, Impreza's controls are clearly marked and logically placed. The audio system and climate controls are mounted fairly high on the dash and are within easy reach." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Music lovers take note, however: The Impreza's sound systems are pretty awful. Audio quality is subpar and the available touchscreen infotainment interface, while an improvement over the base system, offers only small, finicky touchscreen icons and locks out some basic audio functions while driving." -- Edmunds
  • "Everything here is functional, and most operations are easy to accomplish, except for the buttons for heating the front seats on models so equipped - they are awkwardly located below the driver's-side armrest." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "What we like the best about the Impreza's interior is how clean and simple it is, from the dashboard to the center stack to the radio head unit. Even cars equipped with navigation use a simple layout, free of excess buttons and knobs and toggle switches." -- Autoblog (2012)

The Impreza sedan doesn’t have the most cargo space in the class, but test drivers say there is a usable 12 cubic feet of trunk space. The Impreza hatchback offers significantly more space, with 22.5 cubic feet available with the rear seats up and 52.4 cubic feet available with the rear seats folded down. Test drivers add that the hatch opening is wide and that the cargo bay has a low floor, which makes it easy to load gear. The Impreza also offers plenty of storage space inside the cabin for small items.

  • "Small-item storage is better than average with bottle holders in all four doors (the fronts have additional storage space too), a large open bin in front of the shifter, a bi-level bin behind the shifter, two cupholders in the console, and a good-size drop-down glovebox." -- Consumer Guide
  • "… cargo space is especially generous in 5-door hatchback models, which can swallow more than 52 cubic feet of stuff with the rear seats folded." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The hatch's cargo area is wide, low and easy to load." -- Cars.com (2012)
  • "Frequent cargo-shleppers will appreciate the capaciousness of the five-door Impreza, with 52.4 cubic feet of usable space available with the rear seats folded." -- Autoblog (2012)
