2010 Subaru Forester Overview

Redesigned in 2009, critics praised the 2010 Forester for its overall competence and surefootedness, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive. While few called it fun, most said that it has fairly good handling and is generally easy to drive. Powering the Forester is either a four-cylinder engine that makes 170 horsepower or a turbocharged variant of that engine good for 224 horsepower. While most reviewers preferred the turbocharged model, many said the base engine should be fine for most people. Several complained about the available four-speed automatic transmission, as many competitors offer automatics with at least five speeds. A manual transmission is also available with the base engine. Fuel economy for a Forester with the base engine and automatic transmission is 20/26 mpg city/highway, which is a bit below the class average. Opting for the turbocharged model drops mileage to 19/24 mpg.

Inside, critics generally agreed that while it isn’t a haven of luxury, the Forester’s cabin is comfortable and spacious. They noted that the front and back seats offer plenty of support and legroom. Maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded is 68.3 cubic feet, which is good for the class. Standard equipment on base models includes a four-speaker stereo, CD player and cloth upholstery. Upper trim levels add features like a panoramic sunroof, reclining rear seatbacks, leather upholstery and an upgraded stereo. Major options when it was new include Bluetooth, an auxiliary input jack and a navigation system.

Other Cars to Consider

If you like the Forester, you should also check out the 2010 Honda CR-V. The CR-V is highly-ranked, thanks to its spacious and high-quality interior, as well as its generous cargo area. The CR-V also has good handling, critics said, though they complained that its one engine offering is underpowered.

Another strong 2010 compact SUV to consider is the 2010 Toyota RAV4. The RAV4 offers a powerful available V6 engine, as well as one of the few third-row seat options in the class, though most critics said it is very cramped. Reviewers said it drives well, has a comfortable interior and is generally a strong choice. The 2010 RAV4 also has excellent safety ratings like the Forester.
